MagicBob pointed this out to me today, quite a story.
Phillip Foxwell was on the cover of The Christian Conjurer in 2007 and was also at the FCM convention that year. His life story as a magician and missionary can be found in a two part radio program on "Unshackled" found at http://www.unshackled.org/listen 08.html Phil's notes including an audio interview are now kept at the Billy Graham Center in Wheaton, Illinois. Phil took first place at the IBM convention in 1937, and was the first professional magician Dr. Jack VanderWal of Grand Rapids saw when he was in the 6th grade. Grand Champion FISM winner Rick Merrill reports that when he performed at the Auto Show Gala a couple of years ago, John D. Loeks (yes- the major theatre chain owner) told Rick how much he enjoyed the show. After the show, Rick got in the mail from John his wife's father's autobiography- it was a copy of "Philip Foxwell- Missionary Magician." John Loeks is Philip Foxwell's son-in-law. June Horowitz, first female President of the IBM, also met Phil and said he was a fine fellow. The radio program above aired May 11 and May 18, 2008. MagicBob thought Phil was in his 90ties now living in California- he'd love to send him a card if anyone knows his current address. Anyway, listen to the two part radio program above, it is a good summary of the Foxwell life story... I found it interesting that like Ray Comfort today, he used little tricks to get attention in order to hand out tracts in Japan. "Magic" was often used a "connection"/"to open doors" to allow him to share the Gospel while serving as a missionary overseas. |

On the Unshackled.org web site, listen to programs 2991 and 2992. "Unschackled" is heard on over 2,000 radio outlets and produced through the Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago. Quite a story on the life of Misssionary Magician Phillip Foxwell!

Anyone got any Philip Foxwell stories to share? Would love to hear them- I must have left the 2007 FCM convention before having the pleasure of meeting him or hearing him speak there.

Mike Stenberg reported in The Christian Conjurer in 2007 that Philip Foxwell was age 92 at that time, and was selling his book/autobiography for $5.00 postpaid. I have no idea if this address is still valid or not or if Mr. Foxwell still sells his book: Philip Foxwell, 624 W. Washington Street, Alhamra, CA 91801. MagicBob found his short and easy to read book for sale today on eBay for 11 cents plus postage. Amazing.

Per a Google search, turns out Magician/Missionary Phil Foxwell visited Japan after the tsunami per articles by Phillip Foxwell, Jr. and by Phil Liberatore entitled "A Japanese Miracle."

MagicBus...
This thread caught my eye as I cruised through. I had the pleasure of meeting Phil briefly about 14 years ago back in Pasadena, CA, at the US Center for World Mission when I came back from overseas. (Ironically, I was not practicing magic at the time!) Phil, and his wife Jane, were associated with the Center, http://uscsm.org, a non-denominational "clearing house" for international missions. My wife, who was on staff at the time, informs me she's pretty sure Phil has passed on since. My recollection of Phil was that of a dynamic, friendly man with a big heart, even to strangers like myself. It was good to see his name on the Net, spotlighting this man's ministry through magic to the Japanese (traditionally, a tough target group for missionaries) and I appreciate the link so I can find out more about his ministry, now that I am more focused on conjuring. Thanks / blessings, david |

Magic Bus ...
Was poking around a bit more about Phil. His autobiography still shows up on Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/Philip-Foxwell-mis......78082271 ) and is published through William Carey Library (closely affiliated with the USCWM). If you're really interested, you can contact the USCWM Personnel Office and ask for more information about Phil. He was well-known. david |

MagicBob is doing a "book report" on Phil Foxwell at the next Ring 211 meeting in Grand Rapids. Very small world- I have been distributing for years bulk copies of the terrific "Mission Frontiers" magazine at my church which is tied into the U.S. Center for World Mission, see http://www.missionsfrontiers.org The September-October 2011 issue made the same cover point Mr. Wells did above and was entitled "Making Disciples." Excellent articles about John Wesley's Church Planting Movement regarding discipleship along with Floyd McClung's article on the same topic. Just a great resource- keeps one informed on worldwide trends in religion, unreached people groups, growth trends, etc.. One can literally subscribe to this fine bi-monthly magazine for life for free (donations accepted). Currrent circulation is 92,000.

The last I heard of Mr. Foxwell he was in a long term care facility. I have a phone number that goes along with that address you listed(PM if interested). I had the pleasure of talking to Mr. Foxwell several times after his 2007 FCM visit. He purchased around 20 copies of his Presidents Choice lecture. He also sent me a copy of his story from a 30 min. TV show called The Art of Living featuring him.

Yes, I would love to have that phone number. Please PM it to me. I will pass it on to MagicBob (who is making his upteenth visit to India early next year) who no doubt will call him right away as he is doing a "book report" on Phil for the upcoming Ring 211 meeting in Grand Rapids. Much appreciated! By the way, MagicBob drove to Kalamazoo last Saturday and filmed with me the introductions for another 1 hour show which should be posted to http://www.ChristianMagician.org very soon. MagicBob is currently sizing down his huge magic collection, did a big sale at his new residence last Saturday, and FAB Magic in Colon will be selling the rest. http://www.MagicBob.org I believe is his web site.
