RE: the buying/selling areas of the Café.
Why do people post "PM'd you" when their PM will be obvious to the person receiving the PM? Mike Doogan gave me his thoughts, which are pretty good, but I'm still not sure. I shall not rest until I know the secret behind this idiocy!!!!

There was a great show in the UK called "Yes Minister"; in one episode the following conversation took place between a civil service mandarin and his eager junior colleague,
"Can you keep a secret?" "Yes!" Pause "So can I." I think there is an element of this in the public declaration of PM's. It makes no logical sense, but it is very human nonetheless. |

Maybe because there are actually people here who don't always notice the PM notification box at the top of the page?

When I do it, it is also to let others at the Café know that I have responded to the poster's request, and they can then judge accordingly whether they need or want to reply.

When I do it, it is to let everybody know that I am the first one to make or accept an offer. It makes clear to others that they should expect to wait in line behind me.

The PM'ed you is not for your benefit, but for the benefit of other posters. If someone sees that I've PM'ed you about selling or buying something, they know not to bother.

Of course that's only valid if there's one item for sale.

I usually do it so other people think I know a lot of stuff. eg:
Q: Does anyone know how to do this impossible effect? A: PM'd you. PM: I can't figure out how to do it, but let me know if you find out.
