I'm curious to find out some details of Koran's original Ring Flight routine.
Someone once told me (who I can't remember) that Koran's original routine involved having a key appear where the ring disappeared, thus motivating the introduction of the ring case. Is this true? By the way, I'm not referring to the Gaeton Bloom or Mike Close version of the routine either although both are quite nice. In which publication can I find Koran's routine with the key if it exists? I have the reprint of Professional Presentations, but it seems to give short shrift to the flying ring routine. I'm just wondering if there is something else out there. Thanks! :0) |

You are correct, the original is published in Koran's 1st book, Professional Presentations. He did not and never did an exchange routine with a Key. This type of routining, ring and key exchange, is something that has developed in the last few years.
I have no idea who may have been the 1st with this premise added to the routine. With hundreds of tricks and books coming out monthly, I believe trying to keep track of such things in today's world will next to impossible. Prior to the Internet, we were lucky to have 5 new tricks a year invented and 2 books published. Very different today. If you find someone or an organization keeping track, please advise, as it would be very interesting to note. |

My memory said that Koran borrowed a ring, appeared to place it into one hand, asked the person to hold his sleeve, then just brought out his key case, flipped it open and the ring was seen clipped among his keys. It was an improvement over the old Flying Ring where you borrowed a ring, appeared to place it into your left hand, it vanished and your right hand, which was in your trouser pocket, came out with the ring on one of your fingers. This required a HUGE pull. I used this method for years.

That's kind of what I thought.
I like the idea of a ring transposition with a key to give the motivation for the introduction of the key case. I just haven't come up with a method that suits my liking so far. Any ideas? Thanks! :0) |

Sorry Pete, I'm just not a big fan of the routine. I've taken a look at it before. I just don't like the key case. It just doesn't look like a key case/ring to me. I have the same feelings about the Bloom ring flight. Probably just me, but it doesn't fit my style.
Thanks anyway! :0) |

I liked them so much I bought 3, now many years later, I cannot find them, not because the are not still available, but because the Walmarts of the world have caused all the smaller finer men's stores and leather stores to close down. I believe these are the best key holders in the world. Many nice features for men in this accessory for men. |

Michael Close was one of the first to publish this theme (ring/key transposition)in print and put it on video tape (remember those). He did it maybe 20-ish years ago. His handling can be seen on "The Ultimate Workers - Routines From The Professional Repertoire Of Michael Close - Volume 4". I don't remember which volume of the Workers series it is printed in and I am away from home so can't check.

Funny, if they were that popular they would still be available. I've never seen a "squeeze key holder" anywhere in the world except at a magic convention. Heck, when you google "squeeze key holder" the typical magic prop doesn't even come up. Check Google images and the same outcome.
The plain truth is the item you are referring to is not in common usage and most folks have no idea what it is. It is not a key ring that anyone but a magician would recognize. |

They were quite well known in Europe and still are seen in European countries if I'm not mistaken. Ken Brooke sold a ring flight using the squeeze to open key case long before Bloom's Ultimate Ring Flight hit the market. Many non magicians in Europe and the U.S. used this type of key case. |

It seems the name would definitely help. :0)
I still stand by what I've said though. By and large, nobody has any idea what these items are outside of the magic world. I've never seen anyone use one other than a magician. I bet most folks if they are honest would say the same thing. Hey I'm not telling anyone not to buy Mr. Porper and Biro's trick. I'm sure it's great for folks that are looking for this kind of thing. It just isn't for me. Most of the folks that I see daily carry their keys on a key ring with several other keys. I don't even see the usual key wallets that you typically see with ring flight on a daily or weekly basis. I don't think my experience is unique to me either. Choose whichever option works for you. I just don't have a preference for the "squeeze purse type." I believe I pointed this out in my initial post. The point of my initial post was just to find out if there was a published routine of Koran's that used an element of a key transposition. I believe I pointed out I wasn't interested in the Bloom type of routine in that post. In the alternative I'm just trying to find out if there is a published ring flight routine involving a key transposition element to justify the introduction of the key ring. (key ring meaning the standard r*** type of ring flight) If anybody can help with my particular question, the assistance would be greatly appreciated! Posted: Oct 28, 2011 10:58pm RS1963 I'm 41 years old. I've lived in the Southeast portion of the country for most of my life. However I have also lived in shorter periods in the midwest (Chicago and Colorado Springs). I've traveled a great deal in South America and have visited various European countries occasionally. I was around 7 years ago. I was driving quite a lot 7 years ago. I stand by and repeat what I said earlier... I have never seen a person who was not a magician carrying a squeeze purse key chain. I do remember as a kid (around 10-14) seeing the plastic change squeeze purses. As I remember theses were common giveaways at banks as promo give aways. So, you don't have to agree with me. I'm not going to agree with you either. As I have said and will say again... In my experience, the squeeze holder for keys is an anomaly that most modern audiences do not recognize. |

They may not have been around in the Southeastern portion of The U.S. that much. But in the Southwest, West, They were very visible. I would imagine that back east they were not that unknown either. The plastic coin purses have always been around too but those are of course not the same thing.

Yes, we are now referring to two different items. The Dollar Stores have the little plastic squeeze coin purses currently. Now that everyone mentioned this, I do remember a trick being sold years ago for this coin purse. As I remember it was with a quarter with a hole in it. I believe it was a trick where the quarter appeared on the chain that hung from the coin purse.
As I stated earlier, I do not remember any ring and coin transposition effects created for the Koran Ring Flite effect. Maybe Peter Biro was the 1st and only one to create this effect. I was very heavily into effect and one of the 1st to perform with the original Koran Ring Flight sold by Harry Stanley in England. I also owned 5 other versions. Oh wait, I do remember, I have the Ring Zing by C&M Productions. In their instructions they explain a routine where the ring is in the hand, then apon inspection of the ring, it is found to be a Key. Thus this leads to looking at your key case. C&M is now defunct. If you are interested in this effect, I will sell it. |

Hey wmhegbli,
Now that you mention it, I think I remember owning that ring flight years and years ago. Is it the one that comes with the bracket you can pin on your belt to hold the clip? I don't remember the key transposition element, but that was years ago. I've always liked ring flight, but just haven't found a routine that worked for me and made sense. So now I'm determined to work on it and come up with something that fits for me. Send me a PM with how much you want for it. I might really be interested. Interested not so much in the prop as the instructions for the key transpo. Thanks! :o) |

Fred Kaps used no gimmick. He did it all sleight-of-hand. Get whatever "device" (purse, bag, wallet, key ring, key case) that fits you and figure out a way.

If that will always be your attitude, I think I will not ask you for any further help, when it come to magic routines. I would of course pay for your routines, but that is okay, I know where you stand now and will not suggest you know anything about magic again. |

Hegblini: You missed my point. The reason I suggested he "figure it out himself" was because he did not like any of the existing methods, of which there are so many. Perhaps I wasn't clear, I think what anyone needs to do that has an effect they want to accomplish and doesn't like any of those available, they need to be a THINK TANK and make what they want. A good example in the beginning was Koran. Followed by others and now I see "Ring Flight Revolution" advertising here on the Café with another new approach.
