Ok, I just noticed this topic. I've been a member since 2006, and doing magic since I was 13... I think that was about the same year as Woodstock and the first Moon landing. 1969? No wait, I guess 1968, lol. Sometime around the age of 15 I first discovered Tannen's in NYC, when it was still in Times Square. What a great place. I enjoyed performing for anyone who would watch up until maybe college age, then sort of drifted away from it for many years, until I had kids in the early 1990s. Then I picked it back up for several years until the kids got tired of dad doing magic at their birthday parties. I think maybe it was after seeing David Blaine and some of the other early "Street" magicians that I was inspired to pick it up again, and I began doing more magic with common objects rather than the more bulky effects I had used previously (of course, I've ALWAYS worked with cards and coins -- that's second nature). Performing things like Healed & Sealed and Liquid Metal got me a lot of notice, and I was soon invited to perform for my company's annual Christmas party, and begged to do it every year since. This is my excuse for having to acquire cool new effects every year, to keep the annual show fresh. The last few years have seen an explosion in creativity among young magician/inventors, and I've had the benefit of their work, with a lot of help from Penguin, Tannen's and my VISA card. Some of my all-time favorite effects, new and old:
- Out of this World - Liquid Metal - Torn - Greed - Healed & Sealed - Airtight - Blizzard - Fibre Optics - Mojoe - Psypher - Stand up Monte - UCCU (Any Signed Card to Any Spectator's Wallet) - Extractor - The Black Envelope - In a Flash Just got Speakeasy, and ordered L.I.F.T. from Tannen's. Speakeasy's great, gives me a way to get my wife more involved in performances. What fun. Thanks everybody for giving great insights that really help in deciding what to spend money on before commiting to purchases! And here's my best magic trick today: I still have internet tonight, in spite of sitting here in New York state during the incredible bizarre October blizzard of 2011, while tree branches come thundering down all around my house. I'll spend all day with a chainsaw tomorrow trying to get out of my house, but tonight, I'm browsing the Café in a warm house with electricity, TV and internet! I must be the only one with power around here... Good night! |

Welcome ahofer,
Good night until you hear a knock at the door from your freezing friends. Better make up the guest room and put on the hot cocoa. You're about to get popular. Is Speakeasy Stand-Up or Close-Up? -Mary Mowder |
