Hi all,
One of my major headaches in magic is working out routines - I have a whole slew of strong tricks but I find it very difficult connecting them together both presentationally and practically (moving between set-ups etc). I couldn't find anywhere on the Café dedicated to routine ideas. Should we have one? Or have I missed it? Many thanks, Loz |

You could try "we double dare you" or "the words we use".

Unfortunately those areas are both relatively dead and don't really address the issue.
It seems to me that a whole lot of people must have found tricks that flow wonderfully together, both from a presentational angle and, crucially, a practical angle. i.e. moving from tricks requiring a set-up, a shuffle occurs, moving to a trick that works from fasdiu... or how to build a climax from a set of tricks and their ordering. I find it surprising that there is so little discussion of these types of issues. L |

L,
When there isn't much discussion, you start one. That is the whole point of Internet forums, it seems to me. Good luck and karma to you, brother. Now stop complaining and start discussing! |

Hehe - I'm not complaining! I just don't see anywhere appropriate to post!
"we double dare you" or "the words we use" are not the right place. Maybe I'll start my own discussion forum.... |

You can't start your own forum here. You haven't given much information about the effects you are trying to link together. Are you doing close up, stage, or Mentalism. That would help direct you to the correct forum. The forums I referenced are only dead because noone uses them. A Stone said, you could start a topic in one of those.

Well I can understand the genesis of his frustration, posting in a dead forum can feel like talking to a brick wall sometimes. Unless the defibulation works, the post goes unattended and the sought after information never received. This is of course neither helpful, nor encouraging.
Loz, What kind of magic do you do? That probably will yield better results than a blanket inquiry. There are many sub-forums here that cater to just about every specific genre of magic you can imagine. If you know what kind of magic you do, go into that forum, and then ask your questions you may find the answers your looking for. All the best to you. |

Thanks for the replies all.
When I said: "Maybe I'll start my own discussion forum.... " I meant maybe I'll set up my own web site. It was a joke. However, I appreciate the suggestion to narrow down my question. I think the biggest area where routining is a problem is card magic. There are so many excellent card effects out there, but transitioning between them can be very difficult. I want to put together several 5-15 minute sets. At the extreme end we have something like Alex Elmsley's Dazzle Act - a fully integrated card routine involving extensive call-backs, multiple effects, some gaffs and a deck switch or two. On the simpler end, let's say you want to do John Bannon's Play it Straight Triumph which requires a partial set-up. What effects play well thematically with this triumph, can precede it, and still disguise and don't disturb the set-up? Or you want to finish with a colour-changing deck effect. What can you do before that which disguises the set-up? Or if you need to do a deck switch, what effects naturally lead you to such a switch whilst covering it by the effect? Or an effect that naturally allows you to ring in a gaff for a subsequent effect? I'll stop rambling now, but I hope I have expressed the wide range of issues I am interested in and how I think this all comes under the heading of "Routining". I think as a result of all this rambling I've come to the conclusion that a range of specific questions posted in "The Workers" is probably the way to go. I would never want to contribute to the proliferation of sub-forums on the Café, but it surprises me that this isn't already a dedicated area of discussion. Thanks for the comments. L |

How would you have a "routining" sub-forum that would cover cards, birthday parties, school motivation assemblies, and stage shows, without getting totally confused? I think more better to discuss routining card effects together in a cards forum, bithday parties in a kids forum, etc. Ed |

FWIW - My opinion is that the Café has way too many forums already. I totally ignore many of them and probably miss some interesting stuff.

Well speaking from Play it Strait, as it's my opening card effect in my generic close up show, you can do just about anything that doesn't require a preset after it. Due to the nature of the mechanics you can't really do much before it, unless you deck switch or just get ready right in front of their eyes, but once you're done with the effect you're free to go into anything else.
The deck switch for the color changing deck at the end could be something as simple as putting the deck away, pausing for applause and then asking the audience if they wouldn't mind "one more", pull the other deck out, and go for it. I'm a huge fan of not running unless I'm being chased. |

Hey Bill I agree completely - hence my comment above saying the last thing I would want to do is add to the proliferation of forums. I was simply surprised that something that seems so fundamental to me - routines - doesn't already have a sub-forum when many more obscure things with hardly any posts do.
Ed: If you are interested in birthday parties, where would you look to find routine ideas? If you were interested in stage shows, where would you look? Over many years I've come across a handful of excellent ideas for how one effect goes with another in the forums - scattered among thousands of posts. And what if you want to move from coins to cards? or cards to mentalism? William: thanks for the ideas. The irony is you are posting here in the "I want to see the manager" j/k I can't come up with an easy answer, but I maintain that if I wanted to put on a show for 10 minutes, be it purely cards in a parlour situation, or mixed magic for a birthday party, or whatever, it would be helpful to learn from others what effects they routine together for such occasions and to be able to find such information easily.
