Jim, they have not been available for years.

They used to have tons of them at Hollywood magic and I thought they were a common item but haven't been able to find them since Hollywood magic went out of biz.
Jim Posted: Nov 6, 2011 1:56pm Thanks, Larry. I'll look at toy dealers to see if I can find the 3 inch size. Jim

I've seen the 2" size at dollar stores. Unless these are being used close up, where the detail can be recognized (and in that case, metal coins should probably be used), then Pete made note of something that should stir the thought processes... These don't need to be coins, especially for stage work. The audience only has to perceived them as coins. Look for a thin, light-weight, shiny plastic that can be, or already is, cut into discs.
If I may ask, why plastic?

This is a multiplication of the 5 or 6 in the hands and displayed in the fingers. Looks good and takes a lot of practice of course. Levent and McBride both have a nice hanky and Jumbo coin production as well. Plastic was used in the DVDs by both. They were available some time ago. How about trying metal 3" coins with a milled edge here: http://www.topsmagic.com/product_info.php?products_id=28702 Searching on Google, the only plastic 3" coins I found was at Mak Magic, 3 coins and a shell that retail for $24.00. http://www.makmagic.com/product-popup.asp?prodid=P2693 |

Jim, I did a little searching, and if you take Pete Biro's comment as true, then it is possible to have custom coasters made.
The only problem is that coasters do not come in 3" diameter, they are usually larger. If you can get them cut down to 3", then have a gold or silver imbossed label made and apply. The will leave only the edge of the coin to contend with, maybe apply paint to the edge before applying the label. |

Levent has a great way of making the plastic coins sound like metal when you throw them into a container. Check out his manipulation act DVD. It's brilliant.

Here is Jeff McBride doing one of his jumbo coin roll down from his manipulation DVD. What is different is that this was done with plastic coins on his teaching DVD, but when these heavy metal coins became available through Stevens Magic, he now uses these.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_r0J7V_lKE&feature=related The coins quickly sold out, like in a week or 2, Marc DeSouza bought a dozen or so, as I seen them used in his jumbo coin ladder built on the front of a roll-on table. They were $8.00 for each coin and were 24k gold plated. I already checked and the person who had them made has no intension of have more made. He told me minimum order was 10,000. Posted: Nov 10, 2011 11:12am The problem with any of these metal and plastic coins is that they make noise when gliding over one another. The stamping creates so many ridges that they do not handle silently. This would not matter on a large stage with loud music, but in a closer venue, I don't think it would fly by the audience. Maybe the answer is using coaster type disks with gold or silver labels on them. The ony problem is the edge needs covering. I checked on line and it is possible to get gold foil stamped or embossed with an image on it in sizes up to 3 inches. I know most want a metal coin, but coin stamping is expensive and only very large quantites can be ordered. I think a flat stamping can be gotten made. There are just not enough manipulators available to warrant this kind of offering. If there are any magicians that want to make the huge financial investment investment, I think I come up with the perfect stage manipulation coin that can be produced. Lets get together. |

Petrick use to make jumbo coins that did not talk when they where manipulated, because they where made of rubber. But the trouble was when he threw them in a container, it should have made a clink sound which as an audience member you expect. I think the Fred Kaps/Levent method would take care of that. I don't know if Petrick makes them anymore.

Mtpascoe, Petrick coins are/were not 3", they are more like 1-3/4" or 2", I have a couple sets. They are made of plastic, with an embossed silver on each side. Others for the pail are magnetic, maybe that is why you believe they are rubber, but it thin magnetic material. Working from memory as they are boxed away currently.
Petrick's site has been down ever since his wife left him, it is about time, as he treated her badly at their magic booths at magic conventions. If he talked to her like that in public, can guess how it was behind closed doors. Guess, he was not smart enough to know, his act was nothing without her. A few of his items can still be found at Internet sites if you look hard. Levent's idea is more inventive then Petrick's version. I would go with Levent's over Petrick's sound device. Jim is looking for 3" coins, but I find I cannot place a 3" coin between my ring finger and pinky finger as Kaps does in his videos. He was a tall man with large hands. So maybe 2.5" would be better size for most people. Posted: Nov 11, 2011 9:05pm Searching I found Gold 3" plastic coins in India. Don't let the price scare you, the Internet currency converter says they are only $2 a piece. http://www.patilmagic.com/Products/Kids-......845.aspx Posted: Nov 12, 2011 12:50am Just received an answer to my inquiry at Patil Magic in India. The coins are currently out of stock and are not expected to be replenished until after Xmas. |

Great! Now we have a source. I can spray paint them silver since they are gold. Thanks, Bill!
