There is a legendary juggler in Philadelphia named "Amazing Larry V". Larry has been juggling for a very long time, he taught himself 3 balls, 4 balls, and when it came to 5 balls he was stumped, so he asked his sister how to approach this dilemma. His sister who can't juggle two balls said, "do three in your right hand, and two in the left hand". Larry practiced this trick for a long time before he got it.
Once Larry competed in the 5 ball open doing this most unique pattern, and really drew a crowd. This pattern is engrained in his head so strongly that Amazing Larry (who multiplexes 8 balls on a pogo stick) can not do a 5 ball cascade. This is why I always encourage people to join a juggling club if for no other reason than to learn the basics so you can spend less time spinning your wheels.

Fascinating story, Al.
Access to a juggling club is not always easy. I live in a large city, with at least four juggling clubs/schools. One of them is less than 5 minutes by from my work location. I wonder how difficult it might be for avid jugglers in areas that do not have local clubs. The ones close to me are: http://www.centreofgravity.ca/index.html (two locations). http://www.torontocircus.com/index.php?id=1 http://juggling.skule.ca/

"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." "The dog did nothing in the night-time." "That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes. |

Bill Pierce also from Philadelphia is a self taught juggler who taught himself the three ball shower, the four ball shower, and the five ball shower before he ever met another juggler. At Bill's first juggling meeting we taught him how to do a simple cascade. The bottom line here is that no one's imagination can think of everything.

The Amazing Larry V! I have a video of him on the pogo stick somewhere, I'll have to dig it out again - this guy was great!

Larry is great, and that video you have is why Larry is in the Guinness book, he multiplexes 8 balls on a pogo stick. Larry learned his lesson long ago about being a perfectionist, he only uses a special brand of pogo stick that has replaceable springs which he replaces annually. Larry also does 8 hula hoops which he took extreme measures to make the hula hoops cooperate.

It really upsets me knowing that I'm in the UK and the nearest juggling club is an hour journey away, and it's only held on college nights, and would cost me at least ten pounds to get there each time.

Both Lary and Bill ar better than avarage! (to say the very least) and have won juggling compitions agenst jugglers who started in the juggling club inviroment. so this is prof that you should not go to juggling clubs as you will be more creative by learning on your own.
(typing this with my leg up thinking about some ice for my knee, missing jugglers club for the 2nd week!

It is one thing to achieve your goal, but a whole nother thing to look good doing it. You often brag about being a self taught original, but left to your own devices you can only go as far as your imagination will take you. A professionally trained juggler does not have that sort of limitations. Larry caught everybody's eye in the 5 ball competition, but he got tired long before everybody else did. Bill Pierce learned to do the 5 ball cascade properly, and it improved his juggling by light years. I would say that the reason why you never go to juggling meetings is because you do not fit in with classically trained jugglers. Disciplined jugglers all learn from each other at juggling meetings, and as the saying goes "We stand on the shoulders of giants". You my friend are standing alone, and quite defiantly too. Let me make myself perfectly clear both Larry, and Bill share at the Philadelphia club meetings, and are polished jugglers today because of it.

Sarcasm missed. as I have bin going to jugglers club quite a bit, but have had to miss the past 2 weeks as I have trashed my knee. and altho I do find sports juggling to be boring, I strongly beleave in learning from as many as will help you.
Bill and Larry started on there own, many others have as well, going to a juggling club can help you, as long as you are having fun, you win. I learnd to juggle 2 in one hand as a kid, then a friend of mine showed me how to cascade. so not quite self taught, and as far as "original" in 4000 years of juggling what is? and my joke are so old, (how old are they? ) they are so old I have to dress in medieval garb just to tell them.

As a self taught juggler I fully understand this problem, I haven't worked out a 4 or 5 ball casscade patterns yet, so throw a new guy a bone, any resources I can access that can help me out? I'm in the middle of no where so there's no chance of a local juggling club or similar group

There are lots of regional conventions. Visiting one of them could be a life changing experience for you. Tell me where you live and I'll check on the IJA's web site for a convention within driving distance from your house.
BTW the cascade can only be done with an odd number of objects.

You can do a 4 ball full shower, half shower, but for the most part 4 is done with two objects in each hand. When you look at a typical 4 ball pattern it does look deceiving especially when your four balls are done in a syncopated pattern instead of a synchronized pattern.

I am pretty much self-taught in terms of once I see something to work on, I learn it myself. I do not really have many real life jugglers near me.
I have plenty in the box on my desk though. Although, my juggling is fairly different, since no one else seems to do very much claymotion. I would love to have a regular club closer to me. |

There is a club in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town, and if they are not close to you take a trip to the big city one day.
When you say your juggling is fairly different my take on that is your juggling is limited, because at a good juggling club there is thousands of years of trial and error to draw from.

Cape Town is on the other side of the country, JHB is at least 6 hours away, so not too likely to get there.
And yes, my juggling is limited (I do no four ball tricks for example). At the same time, I am working on different things to the occasional juggler I do meet. I find three ball juggling to be entertaining, and, since I do it as a hobby rather than for bread and butter, that is also fine. I would love to get to meet jugglers (and magicians for that matter) more regularly. |

What Al says is true, I've been a lone juggler since 1976.
Started the year right after I got out of High School. Going nowhere with 3 and 4 balls. Never knew of clubs where people meet till now, no really. For the last 4yrs I've been studying youtube. burn me if you must. IDGAF. wish I would have met like minds over the years not one person in 30+yrs till 4yrs ago, and then it was at a concert. |

Oh yea I used to take my clubs to Dead concerts, find other clubs jugglers there, and put them all to shame because most of them were college students that figured how to do it on their own.

No. Why would you assume that? The Kalahari is close to Cape Town, not the other side of the country anyway.
