I've heard a couple of stories of some UFC fighters using their skills to stop criminals as well. And there are the old stories of the Gracies helping the cops find drug dealers on the beaches in Brazil. And the story I posted of the wrestler who stopped the convenience store robbery. Also remember reading once about a karate guy stopping a bank robbery when I was little.
And P&T said on BS that you never hear stories about martial artists stopping crimes. I guess that P&T martial arts episode is Bull****!

A friend of mine runs a karate school. He is, of course, a black belt. A couple of years ago he came back from a weekend event for guys like him (you can tell I'm really up on the lingo.) One of the speakers was a black belt in a wheelchair. He tried to stop a crime and discovered that all the martial arts in the world is worthless against a bullet.

That's also why I have both the black belt and the gun.

That's why it's best to win without fighting. In many examples in life, if you fight, even if you win, you still lose in some way or another. No real winners come out of fighting or violence. The criminal that Magnus Eisengrim mentioned, who put the black belt in the wheel chair faced some serious criminal charges I am sure. He didn't come out of it a winner either. Nobody really won anything. Sometimes you have to defend yourself, but it's always best to win without fighting. Being a martial artist is also not about being a hero in my view.

It's better to outsmart rather than outfight an opponent or potential opponent. Personally, I think martial arts should be more centered around this principle. Using the brain rather than the fist LOL!

And sometimes, people prey on other people just because they can and want to. Take serial rapists and serial killers... Just my thoughts on it...

To believe that violence can NEVER happen to you, is just a little unrealistic. I guess you have a point. Gee, and here I was thinking that if I was just a nice guy, people would see how nice I was and wouldn't want to do any violence on me because I am so nice because people just wouldn't want to commit violence against a nice guy LOL Just joking around Pakar. It's not good to avoid confrontation because sometimes confrontation is necessary, but it's also not good to go into confrontation without first using your brain.

It is not good to go into ANYTHING without first using your brain. That's true heh heh. Honestly, I would much rather just find ways to win without ever having to fight. Sometimes that might not always be possible, but honestly, I really just prefer to resolve problems or issues without violence. It would seem that violence is not any real solution to any problems. I know I sound like a peacenik, but it seems so much better to just resolve issues using the mind and not resorting to violence. It prevents a lot of long term consequences that are associated with violence. Training in martial arts helps to prevent a fight through deterrence and by preventing a fight you help to prevent the costs and consequences associated with violence. The costs of violence, in my opinion are very high so, it's simply better to try to find ways to resolve issues without the use of violence and I think it's possible and can be done. I think at times people don't try hard enough and are sometimes too quick to resort to violence as some kind of short term quick fix without understanding the long term costs and consequences associated with violence.

And those kinds of people are why I practice self defense. Well it looks like you have a good point. What kind of martial arts do you practice? How long you been practicing martial arts? Who is the most awesome martial artist of all time in your opinion? My vote goes to Bruce Lee.

What kind of martial arts do you practice? Non-classical Gung-fu, Goju-ryu, TKD (black belt), Muay Thai (not formally yet), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, have been to a couple other schools but not long term. My best friend has 6th dan in Ninjutsu and we exchange knowledge regularly. I like Hung-gar forms for meditation but I haven't studied it formally for self-defense.
How long you been practicing martial arts? 25 years Who is the most awesome martial artist of all time in your opinion? Lots of greats. I have a loyalty to Bruce Lee, but there's also Wong Fei Hung and Miyamoto Musashi. 3 way tie.

I, am not in the kind of shape I used to be when I was studying and practicing these martial arts. You pretty much got to stay on top of these martial arts and practice all the time to remain good. My priority is my family and performing the Art of Magic. Perhaps one day I will be able to get back into practicing martial arts again. I loved practicing Mixed Martial Arts when I did and it's a great sport and you learn a lot about living and success in life. I basically attended an MMA school which helped to produce a UFC fighter and a WEC fighter (both these fighters later went on to train at American Top Team). I also consider studying some of Sun Tzu's principles from the "Art of War" the study of martial arts (maybe I am wrong) when I was a professional soldier in the US Army. Of course, you have to understand how Sun Tzu's principles are applied today on the modern battlefield and one of the great things about Sun Tzu is that many of his teachings can be applied in all aspects of life outside of the profession of soldiering. A great book to read along with Art of War is "The Secret Art of War" which can be used in the Art of Magic to entertain people (a book was written by a magician based on the book "The Secret Art of War") or can be used on the battlefield to deceive the enemy and as a supplement to the Art of War ("All warfare is based upon deception" -Sun Tzu). But personally, I consider the study of Sun Tzu's principles part of the study of martial arts. My understanding is that some of Sun Tzu's principles are used in some of the other martial arts.

I am now doing TKD and a bit of BJJ... JKD was always an inspiration, Sigung Bruce Lee still a hero. However, I am more inclined towards Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido.
I have always done Silat as its part of my Family's tradition... What I'd really like to get into is Blind Judo, training with blind Judokas that is. Really. And I agree, avoidance and survival (of everyone involved) is always the best outcome in matters of physical conflicts. There is always the Law to consider too... Studying it as it pertains to self protection/defense in your area is often overlooked. First Aid is almost always overlooked in Martial Arts training also, imho... Hurting people is easy, healing people not so...

I've never liked fighting in real life. I love it in sport and movies, where there is a measure of control to keep the practitioners relatively safe. In real life there is too much chaos. Other guy has gang, gang has guns. Even when you are defending yourself you still have to prove it in court. Better to avoid the fight, but sometimes they can't be avoided. Sometimes there are drug-addled sociopaths who won't let you leave without one. I really wish that weren't the case.
