Juggling is an art, but it is not magic. When you say that it is just sleight of hand you are not doing magic you are juggling. Sleight of hand is impressive, but magic is amazing. Sleight of hand is not magic, it is the method of magic. Don't tell them the method, show them the magic.
Reality is a real killjoy.

You let them think you use gimmicked props, so they think they have you caught, but when you disprove the gimmicked cup theory they have no other theories. This causes their logic to collapse leaving them in amazement. At the end they should have no theories of how you did it. This is not always possible, but should always be the goal.

Entertain the crowds, show them a good time and they won't care how you did it. They are just happy to have shared in and were part of the moment.
THAT is my goal. That what works for me. That may not work for others.

My goal is to perform acts of science disguised as magic, through sleight of hand, artistic and theatrical means. As Robert-Houdin put it; "A magician is an actor, playing the part of a magician." In reality, a magician is using a unique blend of science, acting, special effects design, script writing, choreography and psychology to make it look as though he/she can do miracles with little to no effort on his/her part. (this is usually in addition to booking agent, props master, etc.) If an unusual prop furthers that mission, then so be it. If you prefer to use only items available off hand, more power to you - there are many books specifically on impromptu magic that will serve you quite well. Ultimately, the cups are an individual's personal choice. What will look most appropriate to your persona - to who you are and from where you came? BTW... Attached are the set of cups that I use. Bought them from a merchant at $5 each. Click here to view attached image. |

I like that my cups look magical. And at times have taken a perverse liking to somebody thinking they are "rigged." Because I know they will burn themselves out, when I let them examine them.
Have a Magical Day!
------ I really didn't know how to explain it. So I told them the truth, and they fell for it! |
