<<...researchers have analyzed how much control various companies have over the global economy; the results shouldn’t be a surprise: the majority of our economy is controlled by a handful of giants, with the familiar Morgan Stanley and Merryll Lynch right there in the epicenter. Take a look at this visual that was composed as part of the paper:>>

The article in question is [http://iopscience.iop.org/1367-2630/13/6/063021]here[/url] It was apparently published in the New Journal of Physics, which appears to be a free, on-line peer-reviewed journal. I have no idea of its quality.
The abstract: Quote:
The structure of the control network of transnational corporations affects global market competition and financial stability. So far, only small national samples were studied and there was no appropriate methodology to assess control globally. We present the first investigation of the architecture of the international ownership network, along with the computation of the control held by each global player. We find that transnational corporations form a giant bow-tie structure and that a large portion of control flows to a small tightly-knit core of financial institutions. This core can be seen as an economic “super-entity” that raises new important issues both for researchers and policy makers. John

From the article, isn't the actual paper this one:
http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/arxiv/pdf/1107/1107.5728v2.pdf That appears to be different than the one you linked to before, though they are clearly closely related. One may even be an updated version of the other.
