http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIsI5Wddotk Here is a recent clip of portions of my vent work from the stage of my World's First Solar-Powered Theatre at a fair last month. The Good Doctor is keeping a tradition of bringing scientific and quasi scientific products and awareness to small-town America all along the Kerosene Trail as the medicine circuit was known as. Hey, why not? After all, solar photovoltaic electricity was discovered in the mid 1800's. Please check it out. This is the West Coast Premier Traveling Medicine Show.

Hey Doc,
Absolutely the COOLEST trailer I have seen for a long while. Did you build it yourself? Also, I see a bicycle type carriage in the left front of the shot. Is that yours as well for getting around doing promo's for the show. Could we see a few more shots of the rig(s) from different angles? Thanks, Steve http://www.thedummyshoppe.com/blog |

The Medicine Show "wagon" looks great.
And I enjoyed the clip too.

The wagon looks great, reminding me of Professor Marvel's in Wizard of Oz. Your character is very engaging. Clearly the audience is enjoying the show.
I, too, would be interested in who designed and made the rig. Bob |

Nice set up! That should keep you busy working fairs. They love that kind of self contained program - looks good and draws crowds. Enjoyed the video clip too!
Congrats, Tom |

That's absolutely the coolest thing I've seen in a long time! I'd follow that for miles just to find out where it stopped!

Dr Solar, I have only seen stills of your amazing set before, I haven't had the opportunity to see your performance on it.
I have to say it is a complete and well rounded presentation. I started to believe you really live and travel in the little wagon, do you? You put so much attention to detail, that is what makes the over all show so believable. I loved the flash paper in the unfolding scroll and the seamless incorporation of magic. There is so much to see, I wanted the clip to last longer. I hope I get the opportunity to see your performance live someday. I am amazed, Jimmy

The wagon is a remarkable concept and a terrific venue for presentations; the graphics are well designed and having the wagon on a trailer results in it being more economical than maintaining a motor vehicle.

I am awaiting a better updated photo of my bike, perhaps tomorrow. I could live in the wagon if need be. The way things are going, I may have to. LOL
I have a new clip coming out soon. Jimmy, yes, the Vent Haven convention shunned my act.I was told a few years back- NO MAGIC! Now look what they allow. Then again-NO FIRE. Yeah right, I'm gonna burn the house down with that tremendous flash . Reminds me of Jay Marshal and Lefty. When asked to perform at a magic convention, he said he was a vent. When asked to perform at a vent convention, he said he was a magician. It is not unusual for me to have crowds near 150+ at my fair shows. No Jeff Durham but its fun.

Dr. Solar..I'm curious about the Vent Haven ConVENTion shunning your act. How long ago was it? I have been Executive Director for 12 years..and maybe my memory is fuzzy, but I don't remember this. In the past we changed ConVENTion Chairmen every year (that was before we consolidated the position into just an Executive Director)..so maybe it was a year I wasn't in charge. Please give me some details. I don't like to her of anyone being shunned, especially at our ConVENTion.

I'm going to play "devil's advocate" a bit here, and it's more of a "just saying" thing...
I don't know if it could be considered getting shunned if people were told "no magic" at the vent convention. I know a lot of vents do magic, but it's not the magic & vent event that used to be (or still is?) held somewhere, it's a "ventriloquist convention". Personally, I'd be more surprised to hear they allowed magic than I would be surprised to hear they didn't allow it. I don't do magic myself, and while I enjoy watching it, if I were going to the ventriloquists convention, I would expect it to be all about ventriloquism. But with that said, I don't recall seeing magic when I went to the convention, but if I did, it wouldn't have upset me, like I said, I'm just saying....

We try to keep in as much all vent as we can at Vent Haven. That's not saying we didn't use a non-vent act on our big Saturday night show..it added a bit of variety and broke up seeing vent after vent. But the general consensus from our attendees is pretty much what Dave summed up. Magic conventions abound by the dozens..there is really only one vent convention (two if you count the JVA- Japanese Ventriloquists' Association annual event). I have an open policy of listening and have a willingness to try new things. However, I have to go with what our people want. Nothing personal against any magician or non-vent, it's just supplying what our audience wants to see.

And considering there were over 500 WELL satisfied attendees last ConVENTion, I'd say you have done a remarkable job Mark. I gage your success by a fatique factor. If I am ever NOT exhausted by Saturday night, I might start to wonder if somehow you are letting up. So far, so good. By midnight on Saturday, I am always "the walking dead". Job well done. I for one am not going to miss those unlighted back stairs we had to climb into an unlit parking lot at the end of the show. I think this move is one of the best things you have done in recent years and will put us on par with any gathering of any kind.

Yes, while I'm glad I made it once while it was still being held at the "traditional" location, and even without realizing the shortcomings mentioned by some with that place, I think a newer more modern facility will be interesting. Hopefully, I'll get to see it in the next year or two.
BTW, is it closer to the museum, or farther away?

The new location is approximately 6 miles further away...but I rent a bus which takes you there anyway, so it won't be a problem. It is 1 mile from the airport, but not in the flight path, so you don't hear a thing. We stayed there during a weekend to test everything out.

Hello,
Just to get back on track here,Steve and Bob, I designed both the wagon and the bike (trike) to fit my style. It took almost nine years of planning and getting down to it. It took six months to build the wagon although it is an ongoing project of additions. Yes, children call me their own "man behind the curtain". When not on the road, I plug my house into it, the solar array for power to run my shop. The bike charges off the 24 volt wagon set up. The bike is 24 volts. I include another clip here which shows the bike a little better in use. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldmR4-dagk4 Thanks for all the kind words about my show and rig. I do hope to make it to Vent Haven again in 2012 for the historic change of venue.
