Just got an update from Mark Parker on this, for those interested.

The car appearance had to be filmed in the evening evening and was due to rehearse the day before however torrential rain hit and at 3pm same day of filming the stage final prep and technical set up had not happened with four hours until filming...the crew had a couple of tech rehearsals before filming in the rain. The rain never gave in...you can see it on the camera lens and the live audience under umbrellas.

A lot goes on behind the scenes and what you are up against...this was designed and built in just over one week!! it was tight schedule but it got done and still fooled the live crowd.

This should give some insight on how difficult it can be to prep for a TV show.

This really is a great example of a good prop and they were very clever routine. I would have at least added a fake light in the back to give the illusion of something projecting the shadow but that's just me. All in all a great opening and a "television trick" I don't even mind!

Good idea, Ray, to show a "practical" source for a read light. Then of course you could do this with an LCD projector on the floor IF you adjusted the image for keystoning from a low angle projection.
