Hi Tommy

Thanks, Bill. I have used that "site" trick in google before. It works great. Just wasn't thinking. My good judgement was probably clouded by the poor quality of the DVD I had just seen.
Just used it a second ago. Now when I type "site:themag" it comes right up. Thanks for the reminder. It's a shame they don't just build that into the Café search. |

On the odds of ACAAN hits, the answer lies in what question is being asked. Once the card has been chosen, of course there is a 1/52 chance it will be at any given number. But a given combination of a particular card and a particular number will come up on average only one time in 2704. So if the spectators' choices were, say, the Ace of Spades and the first card in the deck, you could say, truthfully, that someone who did the trick every day should expect to see that happen once in about 7.4 years.

Another vote for "The Grail" and now even easier with "The Grail Odds" iPhone App:
"The Grail Odds" iPhone App is for use with "The Grail" by Mike Rose. You must own "The Grail" card trick in order to benefit from this App. The instructions for "The Grail" card trick will not be explained as to not give away the secret to anyone not owning "The Grail". What this App does is eliminate you from having to do any calculations, removing any memory work and allowing you to concentrate on your presentation. "I The love the Grail ACAAN but I hate doing math in my head with the new Grail app there is no more math so I can just work on the presentation,  with Carls app anyone can do this awesome ACAAN Effect with ease." - Erick Olson "Really nice Carl. The Grail has never been easier to perform. Anyone who can follow directions could 'do the trick' seemingly duplicating the double random picks and have a number/card match every time. I appreciate Karelisis contrasting the huge difference in likelihood of a hit doing that versus appearing to match a randomly chosen card and number. This is what I want my spectators to marvel over. Though of course it is not what actually is going on.

Ooopps, my apologies will, unfortuantely, not help unless you are reading this thread from back (most recent) to earlier as I was.
My comment (above) is not well phrased and adds nothing that isn't covered better by many comments of page 4.

Think is actually one of the tricks I use the most. All happens in the spectator's hand with a little something I changed, and it is quite examinable.
Sorry I haven't read all the threads (bad), but there are so much about this trick...so I don't know if anyone else is doing this: The prediction I write is a 6 in a diamond. It can be read as "six of diamond" or "nine of diamond"... So...the deck almost seems entirely normal (they never find out! I get very nice reactions !) |

I have been using the Grail Gold for several months and have been very happy with it. I only do the version where the prediction is made beforehand and the paper/card is in full view the whole time, most of the time in the pocket of the spec, etc..
I have been amazed at how often I get a direct hit with the number, but have had no problem dealing with any number. I do rely on a lot of patter, but that's just me. I do have several decks with different targets, so I can do more than once for the same audience, if the need arises. After reading the previous posts, I think that I will stick with the Grail. This is the closest effect I've ever seen to 'The Berglass Effect'....It's quiet amazing, I don't understand why the negative reviews ? I just watched a part of the DVD, it IS amazing I believe......I'm not sure, but I think Lu Chen has performed this on national television and it got an INSANE reaction and had a huge impact on Magicians. I don't see why it is so bad.....you don't touch the deck.....sure about 4 or 5 numbers don't work but Shin explains how to avoid these numbers easily even if the spectator does pick them. Now remember you are doing absoloultley NOTHING your not touching the deck. A 4 star effect in my mind (I'm not that much into mentalism or ACAAN type of effects but this was a killer for me ).

I find the whole fascination with ACAAN effects to be dullsville myself - maybe it's just me.
I don't think spectators get nearly the kick that Magicians seem to. Comparing this with Berglass? Really? There are many many ACAAN effects on the market. Does this one really break new ground? I'm sorry, I just don't care for ACAAN at all these days. Enough.

I saw Shim Lim teach THINK at a convention last year. He does it very well, is a very creative performer, and I think it's an elegant solution. The complaint about the limiting of the number is not relevant to an audience or magician. If the magician is at all competent, the audience will not know that the number was limited. See for example, Barrie Richardson's way of limiting a number for ACAAN.
That said, if I were ready to spend $30 for the effect, I would spend the money instead on Barrie Richardson's Theater of the Mind, and get a very nice ACAAN, and about 25 other killer effects for about the same price.
