Just watched Jeff Dunham's 2 hours special on his life on the television show "Biography". It was funny, well done, and sheds lots of light on Jeff's life and career. I was honored to have a very small part on the show...to be able to put my two cents worth in for my friend Jeff!

Mark,
It also looked like there were a few shots taken from within Vent Haven Museum. Great promo all the way around. Steve http://www.thedummyshoppe.com/blog |

Steve, you're right..several shots were taken in the museum, and even one with Jeff lecturing at the ConVENTion!

I agree, Mark. It was well done and I enjoyed it. Learning more about Jeff was great, as was seeing Vent Haven and Jimmy Nelson. I thought one of the best parts was showing Jeff's building process.

Great show, and great to see you Mark! I was really looking forward to it, and it did not disappoint. I'm glad it was 2 hours. It didn't feel rushed or drawn out.

One would have to say, Jeff sure did pay his dues to get where he is today.

This is bugging me, I don't know if I'm having a memory lapse or imagining something;
The title of this biography special about Jeff, "Birth of a Dummy" - I keep thinking that was used for something else Jeff did - am I right? - and if so, what was it?

I watched it again last night with my wife. She enjoyed it as well. Mark, the first time I watched it I must have missed you; I think I had just stepped out, but I'm glad I caught you the second time I watched it!
I am extremely intrigued by Jeff's 3-D computer and printer. I am amazed by that technology. The idea that a working 3-D object can be "printed" out is mind boggling to me. It reminds me of something out of Star Trek or Willie Wonka's TV room. Fascinating! |

Keith the 3D printer has been around for some time. I first saw it on Jay Leno's garage. He has a giant one and used it to make parts for his antique cars. When I watched that show I marveled at it. I checked out prices at the time and the machine was 30K. The one Jeff is using costs around 3K. Prices have already come way down. Soon it will be priced for the masses.

The older I get, the more ambivalent I get towards technology, but that would interest me (if it really does get down to being "priced for the masses").

Thanks, Dan. I definitely see how that technology can be used for some amazing things.

Great bio on Jeff. Very thorough and exceptionally done. Glad they took an entire 2 hours to present it. A lot of the bios are only one hour and way too compressed, IMHO. I ALSO agree with Wizardpa - Jeff most CERTAINLY "paid his dues" to get where he currently is. Way to go Jeff!!!

I was surprised how hard it was for Jeff to get on the Johnny Carson show. I wonder if they treated all newbies like that? (First timers for the Johnny Carson show)

Anything I've ever read or heard in reference to that, which really hasn't been a lot but consistent, is that it was normal, especially for a newbie. Getting on the Carson show was considered a Huge career booster and a big, big deal, not only by the Carson people, but those trying to get on there - and both sides knew it. So the Carson people knew they could put newbies through some hoops, and newbies knew they just had to jump through them.

I actually KNOW a guy here at work who was a stand-up comedian in his earlier years and he got on the Carson show AND Carson asked him to "the couch" after his routine. He said Jimmy Stewart was sitting next to him and that that was THE highlight of his career. Unfortunately his career never "took off" as so many other "Carsonites" did. I was suprised to hear that it took Jeff so long to get his shot on Carson. I would have thought that after about 4 - 5 years of honing his routine he would have been ready. Could have been a "timing" issue or the preferance of the scout that kept Jeff off for so long.

What amazed me from reading Jeff's book was that even after his first appearance on Carson, which as we know was highly successful, his career still didn't take off right away. I mean, he worked so hard to hone his act; and after being rejected 8 times, he finally made it on, and STILL he continued to "pay his dues." It wasn't like after that first Carson appearance that the red carpet was unrolled for him, even though I understand he was making a very good living. But it seems he wanted much more. I admire Jeff for this, but at the same time I know that I couldn't do it.
I studied acting in college at one of the best theater schools in the country, worked hard, and gave an acting career a shot for a few years. I value those years immensely and I wouldn't change them for anything. But, it didn't take me long to realize that, however talented I was, I was just not made for the craziness, the dysfunction, and the constant rejection that is inherent in show biz. I also weighed what I'd be losing to gain what I thought I wanted, and I came to the conclusion that it just wasn't worth it. The famous acting teacher Stella Adler once said that an actor (and I'd say any performer trying to "make it") needs a "core of steel." I think that's exactly correct. For better or worse, I did not have it for a performing career. Jeff clearly does. |
