I don't, but I've always thought it would be a good idea. Because I know there are things that I did a couple times and never touched again... I think I'm going to write them down soon..

I still keep an updated electronic list from all of my tricks with full description, classification (kids, mentalism, bizarre), How to perform it (close-up, Parlor, Stage), Props needed to perform, script, type of music , duration, set up needs and so on.
Also, I keep in a database complete routines (more than one tricks) and different kinds of shows I have been developed. It is a challenge to keep it updated. but by this way it is more easy to search for something and it is a easy way to build my shows. Regards! |

I too have a complete database of tricks, routines and props. It really helps when putting together a show. Also you need this for insurance purposes in case of fire or theft or something.

I keep all my Original Instructions and Paper Work in a set of three ring binders w/ plastic dividers, catagorized by type of Effect,...Stage,Parlour or Close-Up and all the Original Boxes are broken down and placed in a footlocker.
Like Mike Des,it makes it easier to keep track of all my Effects. Mike |

This is at the top of my to-do list, but I fear the daunting task will never get done. Insurance is my main concern.
Like snowpuppy, I have managed to finally organize all of my instructions, but I categorize them by manufacturer. I also keep receipts and descriptions from any auctions as a reference for later. The older I get, the more worried I am that I'll pass suddenly and leave my wife with a room full of "junk," when in fact, if sold prudently, could fetch a pretty penny. A well-maintained data base with purchase prices...and contact info of some of the more reputable auction houses...could at least give her a starting point for selling the collection for a reasonable return.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

I use an Excel spreadsheet which lists each routine, the value of the props, time for each routine and its sequance in different shows. I sort by sequence order and that is my set list along with the estimated time for the show.

One day I got to work on it and now I have it all on my computer.
Every trick I ever purchased and the price I paid for it (or as close as I could get to it). That way if anything ever happens to me my wife will kknow what to do with it... because I know it will be out the door when I go. LOLL

A few years ago I decided to do an inventory of everything I had. I printed out my list of props from my database and tried to locate each prop and checked it off on the list. I found things I didn't know I had and found that some things had disappeared. Took an entire weekend and I'm not sure there was a great benefit but it was a lot of fun just finding some older tricks that I started out with.

Notice! The very worst thing a magician can do is separate the instructions from the prop. Keeping the instructions in a 3 ring binder is not a good idea at all.
I have been to a number of Estate auctions, and if the instructions are not with the props or props, then they do not include them in the sale. What I have seen is, the last item to auction off is the binder of instructions. So the persons that just bought the props are without the benefit of how to work the trick. Card tricks are just all thrown in a box and sold for next to nothing, again if not packaged with the instructions, are gone for good. Now most everything is going on DVD, so that makes it yet another sale of separate DVDs. I suggest you put a trick with it's instructions in a plastic bag and write the name of the trick on the bag. That way they will be kept together. Why, because guys that obtain Estate magic, do not go through and match up the instructions with the props. It is just to big a job. Plus they can tell the widow, that it is not worth much as is, so you are taking away from your wife or relatives. I have seen a number of widows get ripped off by knowing magician who take advantage of them. I cannot believe this question has not been responded to by the word, TAXES. If you do shows, even as a side job, the magic purchase for the year can be taken off your "Hobby" earnings, thus lowering the taxes you must pay for additional income from a side business or hobby. And the proper word for is "Inventory"! Depreciation is another word, if you don't take all the value the 1st year. |

I keep track of my magic in a spreadsheet. I am glad I started this right from the start. If I didn't, I think it would be too monumental to go back and start.

I use excel. I have another list of card sleights and one of coin sleights, and all lists have reference to the books or DvD's they come from, so I can find them easily.
I also use Michael Ammar's cue sheets and effect sheets as well, they are a great tool. |

For those who want to keep the original instructions in a binder, you may want to copy the instructions and place the copy in a bag with the trick like Bill suggests. Also, a picture of the apparatus attached to the instructions might be a good idea. How many times have you seen tricks for sale on an auction site that are missing one or more vital parts to the effect? If someone were to sell of our collections, how would they know what parts and pieces went with which trick & set of instructions?

I haven't up to this point, but due to sponge balls being laundered, along with bills, cards, sleeves, and whatever else I may carry on a day to day basis my wife has informed me that if I don't ensure they all make it back to our magic room at the end of the day that she will hide the ones I leave in my pockets and I will not get them back until I complete a chore of her choice. Perhaps I shall now start a list and keep an inventory. I don't mind to put away laundry, but boy do I hate folding it!

Besides listing props, wardrobe & routines in a database, I have columns for filtering and sorting. I use merge documents for packing lists, show line-ups, routines, carne (customs), taxes, maintenance, insurance, preset, shipping, light & sound cues and more. Good paperwork has saved me plenty of times. And dynamic lists save a lot of time.
