I think this is a new puzzle. I've never seen it before any way. Let me know what you think and if you have heard something similar before:
Tom - "I tried 93 but I think it is too low. I'm going to try 113" Sally - "Why would you do that? 113 is lower." Tom - "113 is lower than 94?" Sally - "Of course it is. Tom - "So I should try something like 70?" Sally - "Don't be silly that's even lower. You should try somthing like 150" QUESTION - Sally is correct in her statements. What is Tom trying to do that has got him so confused? |

This puzzle involves a common household item. There is something a bit odd about it's operation that you may never have noticed.
I'm curious about wether this puzzle seems difficult of if the answer is obvious. Any thoughts or comments? |

I've struggled to explain this to others, including someone who thought 150 was the same as 90 (I had to explain it was higher than 90).

Thanks Scott,
I can tell that you know what I'm talking about and I can see how someone might think 150 was the same as 90 in this situation. Actually, that might be a good addition to the conversation in my puzzle. |

Sounds like a great puzzle and I don't have a clue about what the item is. I need hints!

Anyone who thinks 90 is the same as 150 probably doesn't mind burnt popcorn.

I think you guys all have the answer I am thinking of. I am going to give my answer but I still need some feedback from every one so read all the way down.
SPOILER SPACE - - - - - -- -- -- Tom is trying to cook something with a Microwave oven. The microwave has a digital display and a keypad. If you enter a two digit number it sees it as seconds. If you enter a three digit number it sees it as minutes and seconds. So 99 is 99 seconds but 100 is 60 seconds (1:00 minute) This is the way my microwaves have always worked. I also checked it on my parents microwave. I live in the US and I think this is common but I need feedback. Please check your microwave by entering 99 and then 100 and see what happens. Let me know. If your microwave doesn't work this way I apologise for giving you an usolvable puzzle. |

That's exactly how mine works. Entering 150 gives me a minute and 50 seconds, not 1.5 minutes (aka 90 seconds) I'm not sure but if I enter 90, I don't know if counts down from 90 seconds, or if it translates it to 1:30
Whatever it is, the time measuring discrepancy of microwaves seems to be the answer you were looking for.

I can't even find one with a keypad here in Sweden when looking for a manual to see how one with a keypad would work here.

Something similar was part of the weekly puzzle on the radio show called "Car Talk." I think it was several years ago, but I'm not certain.

Let me know if someone can confirm that Car Talk used this idea.

Thanks Uncle Yodel and Scott Cram
That is amazing. It is close to word for word what I came up with. I swear I never heard it. I can't believe you found it like that. I thought of going to car talk and looking for it but I figured the chances of finding it were small. Sorry I doubted you Uncle Yodel. I was really hoping you were wrong and just remembered something vaguely similar/ |

I had never even heard of Car Talk until Uncle Yodie mentioned it.
From that point, I searched for the terms "Car Talk", "puzzle", and "microwave". Those provided links to the puzzles, but required a password. Fortunately, the links from the search did provide enough information to determine the year (2005), so I just found their puzzle archives and searched through all their 2005 puzzles until I found it (Boy, am I glad they don't do one every day!) I'm impressed that anyone could remember the source for a puzzle after not thinking about it for 6 years! I'll cut you some slack, MagicMike. You're from Gainesville, Florida, so you must be a good guy. ;) |
