Hi everyone! Are any of you utilizing a Tenkai Palm from a double inserted into the pack as a means to perform card to wallet? I am surprized of the effectiveness, and how people are not able to catch it..Any thoughts, opinions????

Did the idea come from a spark of genius or are you refering to Gary Kurtz, who makes a card appear in a nest of envelopes using the tenkai palm? Either way it's a fab effect and works a treat! I like it but don't perform it... kellser121 does, get in touch with him on PM!

Hey Steve,
I perform behind the bar, so the tenkai palm is far too angle sensitive for my working conditions. It's a shame because there are so many great moves that can be accomplished utilizing the palm. Oh well. |

The best book on the use of the Tenkai Palm was by Rick Johnston titled "Practical Impossibilities" and is well worth the trouble to find one if you want to perform miracles using this under-used technique. He even has the idea of turning an origami turtle into a live one.

Just to keep the record straight:
"Johnsson" is the correct spelling. It's an excellent book.

Hi Steve, There is a move on the Bare Handed DVD where the card is selected, squared up and striped out and placed in tenkai all in one move. Its so quick that no one knows it even happened. Kirk Kokinos

Hi everyone! I've always been pretty lousy at palming, and using the Tenkai just seems to work for me after seeing Daryl do it in an ambitious routine...
It is, "angly" but seems to work well directly in front of, or to the spectators left side (if using your right hand for the execution)... Excellent comments from everyone! Thank You!Steve

The Tenkai Palm is beautiful, but very limited in its uses. If you ever perform magic for lay audiences, this is one move that will probably not be suitable.

Check out the Lennart Green for a masterclass in lateral palming or Derren Brown's 'Devil's Picturebook' for his use of the tenkai palm, in particular Zamiel's Rose.

Funny how this thread suddenly became a big reference thread for this palm, ego thing I guess. I'll do the same. In Barehanded Magic, Krik's method to get into the palm is excellent. For card to wallet, I've fooled around using tenkai palm, with a normal wallet and a card case. I'd use it for "...to card case" In Roger Crosthwaite's Real Gone Aces, he explains this excellent card to case where you can shake the case and actually see the card in the case.

The Tenkai is an extremely versatile move when properly applied, and using some Vernon and Marlo subtleties increase it's effectiveness and limit the angle problem. I use it all the time, even surrounded, to excellent effect. And I work almost exclusively for laymen and have, full-time, for over a decade. The biggest problem (and this is true of ANY sleight, not just palming or the Tenkai in particular) most magicians have is that they are NOT AWARE OF THEIR ANGLES! I see magicians all the time thinking they've fooled everyone, when actually all they've done is expose the method. Unfortunately, most of them don't want to hear about it, and brush any advice or suggestions away as "jealousy."

What do you mean you disagree?????
I am joking, of course. Seriously, if you could offer any advice (or even point me in the right direction of the Vernon or Marlo sources), I would love to explore it further. I have never really had any luck making it angle proof but if you have worked out the angle problems, I might pull out a couple of the effects I used to work on that I shelved.

I have never felt comfortable with the angles associated with the Tenkai palm. I am just not good enough at crowd control or perhaps I am a little too sensitive to being caught to try it with a real audience. The bottom palm is easy to execute and (I believe) easier to cover and less prone to angle problems.
Of course, I learned and used the bottom palm (Pat Page’s version of the Endrnerse bottom palm) for a dozen years before I ever tried the Tenkai palm. Maybe it is a comfort zone thing with me! Also, the palm (whichever one I use) is built into the routine that requires it. I don’t really want to change the workings of the routine just to throw in a new handling. Maybe if I had learned my card to wallet using the Tenkai instead of a bottom palm I would use it more. And for those of you who find it difficult or scary to perform a full card palm of any kind, try to use a Mercury fold to finger palm and load from there. That is as easy as it gets!

I love the Tenkai Palm!!
I learned about it while watching Let's Get Flourious 7 or 8 years ago. I use tenkai with cards jumbo coins and other objects... your really not limited with your angles at all. Just make sure your sides are clear..lol All jokes aside though, you really can get away with this palm... like a lot!! Don't be afraid of it. there are lots of possiblities just sitting out there waiting to be discovered. There is a video called Bullet Proof by Todd Theman check it out. This guy uses Tenkai all the time!! And I have seen him using it in person..... just freaking nice stuff!!! |

Don't forget that your hand should never tilt forward or backwards..and keep the item in tenkai parallel with the ground...no matter how you move....keep it parallel with the ground..
check out Gary Kurtz video Let's get Flourious for some great tenkai tips...or one good tip anyway. |
