Hello all, I'm thinking of purchasing a Kindle. Would any of you folks have experience with the Kindle care to comment on it? Also any other recommendations would be welcomed.
Thanks, edh

I have a Kindle and a Nook (Barnes & Noble version). I have a slight preference for the Nook, but they're both great. I had a hardware problem with the Kindle after about a year and a half, and rather than get another one, I tried the Nook. For the device, I prefer the Nook, but I like shopping on Amazon more than on BN.COM, so in that respect, I prefer the Kindle. But now I have an ipad, and I have both the Kindle and the Nook apps, so my accounts are synched and I can order with either and read the books on the ipad. I don't think you can go wrong; some people prefer the Nook and others the Kindle, and for me, it's a slight preference. If you're planning on getting a digital reader of either type, I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.

I love my Kindle! The battery life between charges is great. The digital "ink" display is just like reading a page in a regular book. No glare - you can even read it in sunlight.
And the price is right. Good thoughts, Bob |

Do either of them (Kindle or Nook) have any magic books listed? I would love to get the Tarbell Course and be able to hold the entire thing in my hand.

I have lot's of Magic books on my Kindle. You can get a lot of stuff at http://www.Lybrary.com in PDF format which you can load into your Kindle. For books the "e-ink" is kind to the eye's, not like reading on an LCD screen.
The new Fire by Kindle is an LCD screen so it won't be very good for reading but good for watching movies. Iven

As Bob mentions, the dedicated e-readers have very eye-friendly screens. Does the iPad (or any other tablet) compare in that regard?

I have both the iPad and the Kindle. I find the Kindle much easier on the eyes for reading. However, if you read a lot of books with pictures, or illustrations, then the Kindle app on iPad is superior - or perhaps the new Kindle Fire. For text though, you just can't beat the e-ink display. I have to agree with Bob that the New Kindle prices are excellent!

Battery life and readability are the key advantages of e-readers over iPads or any other device with a backlit screen. My wife and I have both had Sony Readers for several years and swear by them. The Kindle has the great advantage (at least in the UK) that ebooks from Amazon are generally MUCH cheaper than those from Waterstones (who have rights to the Sony format in the UK). Also managing downloads is easier with the Kindle. My wife wants a Kindle as well.

I've had both a kindle and an ipad. I don't use the kindle at all, I read everything on the ipad. I like the backlit screen (it particularly came in handy during a recent power outage), like not having to have the lights on when reading, and as far as eye strain is concerned, it does allow you to switch to white text on black which significantly cuts down on any eye strain when dark.

I generally prefer reading on the ipad, also.

I have the Kindle and its a very good ebook reader. With e-ink, it is easier on the eyes as compared to other back-lit screens such as ipad. Moreover, Kindle's weight is a lot lighter than the ipad, this makes reading on-the-go easier too.
You can play mp3s and even browse the web with Kindle too. Kindle recognizes mobi and pdf formats, if you have other formats such as epub, you can always convert them to mobi format. I use a program called "calibre" to organize all my ebooks and to convert different formats too.

The Kindle does allow you to browse the net but it does a lousy job and freezes up on many websites (that's why they call it experimental). I hear that the new Kindle Fire does an excellent job surfing the Internet and does it very fast.

I have an old school Kindle. LOVE IT! It is eye friendly and I am pretty sure the new Kindle Fire is not so much. I also like being able to use my phone to read my Kindle books.

I got some popcorn balls for Christmas.
I'm not kidding! What's a Kindle? I thought it was an electronic reader, until someone said, E-Ink. Eating my popcorn ball, :pop: |

Devious-
A Kindle is an electronic reader. E-Ink refers to the technology used that makes the screen appear almost exactly like regular paper and the letters look like real type. Unlike laptops, tablets, etc., the screen is not backlit and has virtually no glare - that is why it is as easy on the eyes as a physical book. I have a hard time reading very long books on a computer screen, but on a Kindle it is not a problem at all. Good thoughts, Bob |
