Today marks 70 years.
I used to live in a high rise above Pearl Harbor, and could see the Arizona Memorial from my bedroom window. The sight never got old, and never--when I took a moment to look directly at it--failed to stir me. Of course I also visited the memorial several times. It's a peaceful, sobering place. Back in Pennsylvania, I once saw a "Pearl Harbor Survivor" bumper sticker on a car in a supermarket parking lot. I stood around waiting for ten minutes until the old man came to his car, and I shook his hand and thanked him for his service. But that generation is nearly all gone. So I suppose the best substitute would be to thank any of today's men and women for continuing the tradition of putting themselves in harm's way for no other reason than their country asks them to. Salute! |

My father fought the Japanese is the South Pacific after their sneak attack on the USA. He and the rest of the people from that era were America's greatest generation.

They'd sent a declaration of war, but the Japanese ambassador in Washington felt the security rating was so high, he had to decode it himself, and he wasn't very good at the decoding process. I think he may have finished it just after the attack. And, Marlin? Where was this?

And, Marlin? Where was this? That's todays lunch menu at the Sidwell Friends school in Washington DC. The school the Presidents children attend.(Several Presidents children have attended Sidwell Friends.) Apparently, it was just a coincidence that Asian Food Day fell on Pearl Harbor day but it struck me as funny. And I don't know how someone could put that menu together, with that picture, and the words "Pearl Harbor Day", without stopping for a second and saying "maybe we should move Asian Food Day to thursday." |

Here are the details of Japan's declaration of war:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_on_P......n_of_war It was definitely intended, as Kevin noted, to be a sneak attack as the timing of the attack was designed to catch us completely off guard. |
