Last night I went to a friend's house for some fun and frivolity. My friend's wife, brother, cousin and 12-year-old son were there. The son really looks up to us "old folks" and we always indulge him by playing and including him in on the festivities. The boy wanted to play cards, so we played some Rummy and a slapdash version of Hold 'em. I'm still a really raw beginner, but I was confident enough in my abilities to try and pull off a couple of simple card tricks for the kid.
I started with the one where the one card turns up backwards in the deck (after you put it behind your back) -- can't remember the name of it. That amazed him a bit, but he let on that he had seen it before, and hinted that he knew how it was done. Then I used the old "peek at the bottom and cut the deck" trick (also probably not the actual name of the effect). I told him to place it on the "top" of the deck, but he was suspicious enough that he shuffled the deck just to make sure. Fortunately for me, the card he picked was still in the right place, and when I did a little showmanship and picked it out after he made it "impossible," he got that jaw-dropped, eyes-wide look. Mwa ha ha! That was really the first time I've done more than one working card trick at a party/get-together, and it's safe to say I'm now officially hooked. I've been renting magic books & DVDs from the library and Netflix like crazy, and am more motivated than ever to build up my skills and repertoire! |

I too am new at this, my three pest personal resources (and I am not affiliated with any of them) are:
1 - this place and the friends I have made here 2 - Mark Wilson's "Complete Course in Magic" and 3 - Magic Tricks DVD called "Forcing a Card" If there is a Magic Club or group where you live - join it! |

Can't second that magic club idea any more highly. The club in my town has disbanded due to low membership. It's ironic that beginning magicians are reluctant to approach clubs as they feel they are kind of exclusive/elitist when most are always looking for new members with a serious interest. If you genuinelywantvtovprogress in magic there's no better environment. I'm old school in m opinion in that I loooooooove learning from books rather than DVDs. They are better value and force you to insert your own personality into the effects. Just immerse yourself in magic and above all else enjoy!

It's my opinion you can learn a whole lot more from video's rather than books. The nice thing about a book is there is usually a lot of really good stuff crammed in there. The problem is you don't see how it is done and done well.
I would suggest you search the internet with entries like "magic Café best card effect" or "magic Café best money effect", or whatever you are interested in. The Magic Café is probably the best place to get really good feedback. You can then check out a site like Penguin Magic to see if you like some of the effects on the "best" lists. Then, go back to your search and search for the magic Café entry for that effect and read up on what people say. They will frequently discuss what they like and dislike about the effect. FYI, one of my favorite effects is REvelation(s) by Claude Rix. It is VERY easy to do, is utterly amazing, and involves a card deck and an ordinary die. The downside is it uses a special deck. However, learn a few effects with a regular deck, learn how to do a deck switch and you have a real gem. Here's another little tip: If you barely cut the lower left and upper right corners (if you are right handed) of one card, you now have a key card. If you spray the tiniest drizzle of Elmer's spray glue on a circle about the size of a quarter on the center back of that card (Cut out a hole in a piece of paper and use as a stencil), and let it dry, you now have a key card that will slightly stick to any card on top of it, you now have a key card that allows your participant to give the deck a bit of a shuffle after their card is lost in the deck. Good luck and enjoy! KJ |
