I was at the ToysRus in Times Square to catch up with an old
friend who "pitches" magic there and caught a girl "pitching" the squirmal. Her handling was great (I'm sure they train these guys), but her "pitch" reveals the gimmick...still purchases were being made. From perspective, I wouldn't really call this "pitching" per se, more of demo type of job...which is why I put the "pitching" in quotes...I think there is difference here, do you? What are your thoughts?

As long as they get the money, does it really matter "how" they got it? That's like trying to figure out all the different ways you can change a $20 bill ... the end result is still $20.

Good points, I just know her handling made me go back and practice mine...

If you deliberately draw and then skillfully turn a tip, that's a pitch, and it requires a lot of work and energy to pull it off. But a really good pitch will draw a huge crowd, and it will be raining tens and twenties on the pitch table at the end of it. And a good pitch WON'T tip the gimmick, either; I would guess that about half the people buy the worm just to see how it works. If you just stand there and passively demonstrate the product, it's just a demo, no matter how great the show is or how good the moves are. If by coincidence some people stop to watch and a few of them some of them buy it, it's still just a demo. Big difference!! SETH

Carl's sister,Cortney, I believe is her name seems to be a bit lazy. She complans to Carl all the time that the store isn't that busy but everytime Carl goes to N.Y.C. and works the spot with her his gross is triple what hers are...everytime.
I have heard from other friends that live in N.Y.C. that her moves are good but she dosen't have a very good attitude and no enthusiasm.Like I said I never saw the girl work or even meet her.The two times I was at the store every other pitch joint was up and running and doing good but her spot was empty. So take that for what it worth.Sounds like Seth hit the nail on the head huh... Don |

The short answer is -- a pitch is like a demo on steroids (with apologies to Barry Bonds). SETH

You haven't seen this done properly unless you see the fabulous routine that Dick Koornwinder does!
