What set of coins do I need to perform this routine?

You need a sun/moon coin with a shell that fits. You also need a sun or moon coin which contrasts your shell. Todd Lassen sells the coins. The ones I have from him are a British crown (copper)and Morgan dollar (silver) - this is the sun/moon coin; a British crown shell; and a Morgan silver dollar. Todd also throws in a British crown for use if you want. One of the unique things about Todd's shell is that is fits perfect and can be shown on either side close up.
Of course, you could do the colors reversed, but you need the contrasting color of coins. |

The key to SAMOYA is that the sun/moon ] must fit over EITHER coin (the c/s insert & the ungaffed 2nd coin) - which is why a typical Johnson Sun/Moon such as found in a in a Hopping Half set won't work.

Around $300. Is this price for the TWIAD set by Tod Lassen mentioned above? or for a different set of coins and manufacturer? Thanks

If you still want to know what TWIAD stands for, you will get some hints here:

There is a saying in entertainment circles that the worst person to irritate is a comedian, because making fun of someone who has wronged you is perhaps the most satisfying method of "getting even" and perhaps the most painful to endure. Combine comedic talent with incredible skill and you have the ability to forever immortalise an offender. I seem to remember some journalist who got on the wrong side of Garrison Keillor (of Lake Wobegon fame) and became the butt of numerous jokes on his long running radio show (his last name was tied to a smelly dog rooting through trash in Lake Wobegon, I think).
The name "TWIAD" will forever stand testament to how little respect Todd has for a certain craftsman and how much respect he has for his own craft. |

I wonder if Roy Kueppers or Jamie Schoolcraft can supply this kind of coin.

If you don't have the cash to buy the complete set, you can take the second coin and use a nail file to make the second coin fit the shell of the Sun and Moon set. Just go progressively all around the coin and do not make too many attempts too early or you'll jam that coin in the shell (just compare the coin you are working on with the insert of the Sun and Moon set).
Your self prepared coin may not look as perfect as a Todd Lassen set but you'll have it faster and at a lower cost. The routine is well worth this (about one hour careful) effort

Very good idea Lawrence O, if this gaffed coin can't be found then a regular coin can be easy adapt to fit the [ for a low cost Sun & Moon set.

Another option or idea will be using one S/C (Morgan/5 Rupee) coin + exp Morgan [ and one extra 5 Rupee coin, In this case the shell fits both coins, kind of reverse Sun & Moon. In this case the coins are more affordable and easy to get. I wonder if this will work for Samoya.
