760 sounds like a lot, Devious, and I agree that many if not most of those new laws are probably crazy, but that's nothing compared to the rising tide of thousands and thousands of new pages of Federal rules and regulations that the various Federal agencies have enacted in the past year, based on Congressional authority, but without Congressional review, and without anyone actually voting for them. The Federal Register is now over 80,000 pages long!

You can still scan your own alcohol here in Kansas, but that causes its own problems. The system is locked until a cashier can come over and verify that you're old enough which really takes the convenience out of the self-service check out. I understand why that is, of course, but in those cases it's just as easy to go to the line.

Anybody that uses the self check out is only guaranteeing the reduction of jobs for their children, their grandchildren, possibly even themselves. Oh yeah, I'll get the old saw about this mention above whereas a actual person does have to come over occasionally to check or assist, but they often manage 10-15 checkout stalls thus un-employing 10-15 other Americans selling American company's Chinese made goods. I understand there are Home Depots in Maryland that have actually no human check out clerks. And some care to shop there?
I'll look into the other 759. Happy 2012.

At the dawn of the self-service banking age in 1985, for example, the United States had 60,000 automated teller machines and 485,000 bank tellers. In 2002, the United States had 352,000 ATMs—and 527,000 bank tellers. ATMs notwithstanding, banks do a lot more than they used to and have a lot more branches than they used to. Source. |

From the same source: "In a discussion like this, there is a problem in comparing 1985 stats to 2002 stats. The economy has grown enormously during the intervening time and banks have grown with it, which serves to hide the loss of tellers' jobs. Something similar has occurred with airlines' use of automated check-in. Of course these forms of automation allow cutbacks in staffing; otherwise these banks and airlines wouldn't have made the changes." "'More recently, the Bureau of Labour Statistics reports there were 600,500 bank tellers in 2008.' The same page gives the average wage as of May 2008. [And] Didn't Countrywide, IndyMac, Washington Mutual, National City, and others go down the tubes after May 2008?" "In the ATM example: * Tellers have gone up from 485,000 to 527,000, or 8.7%; * ATMs have gone up from 60,000 to 352,000, or 586%; * The country has grown in population from 238 million to 287 million, or 21% (according to google). So this is not strong evidence that "ATMs have not in fact displaced bank tellers." If what we know is that a) ATMs have increased at a rate about 70x faster than tellers, and b) teller growth can't even keep up with population growth, that does not prophesy good things for the position of "teller". ATMs may not have displaced bank tellers _completely_, but surely they have displaced many bank tellers, and will probably continue to do so."

Jobs becoming obsolete does not inherently mean people will be unemployed.
Also, suggesting that we avoid progress so that we can continue to pay people to do out of date, unnecessary work, is incredibly dangerous, and ignorant thinking. It's horrible for the economy, and employment, standard of living.

As far as horseshoeing is concerned, there are about 9 million horses in the USA today, which is about as many as there were in 1870. There are at least 25,000 working farriers. So despite the horseless carriage, there is still work in that field.

And as far as the loss of certain banks goes, they tend to be taken over by other banks, which brings more business to the "other" banks, and I assume requires more staff. Washington Mutual disappeared in name, but Washington Mutual account holders becames Chase account holders (without missing a step). Curiously, in my case, Washington Mutual had previously "inherited" my account from an earlier casualty - Great Western. Same account number, now with my third bank.

I remembered yesterday why I stopped shopping at Safeway: they installed self-checkout lines. Which meant that they could fire all the checkers. Seriously. The person monitoring the self-checkout was doing double duty on the 8 items or less line, and they had a total of two other registers open, so the lines were ten people long, backed down into the aisles.
Besides, all the alcohol I buy has one of those caps over the lid anyway, and the key to remove it isn't sitting around in the self-checkout line.

When the Law's that are already on the books are not being fully enforced, new Laws must be written.
