I am an avid collector and performer of color changing knives. These pictures were taken a few years ago and don't include all the sets I've picked up since then.
I also started building a website to showcase some of my treasures here http://www.themagicmuseum.com/museumlist......tegory=Y but never got around to finishing it. |

Merc and MB, it is not a brain cell issue, bit one of employment.
They have rules that they must follow or be fired, and they are not going to jeopardize their livelihood -even though they would probably prefer to in some cases - and rightly so. I do feel for you, MB. I have lost knives I forgot about for the same reason, and it made me want to bang my head against the wall!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

BTW, it seems that Swiss Army Knives are now ok on flights. Even the ones with 3.5 inch blades.

I love all of my knife sets and alter my handling accordingly but there is a lot of truth in the buzz about the affamed Jimmy Sanders knives. The dimensions are perhaps the most ideal I have ever seen.
Interestingly enough however, the Jose de la Torre knives have nearly identical dimensions and are a far more cost effective substitute if you don't mind the absence of stag handles to differentiate the knives in your pocket. JP Jackson's Case sets in pearl and bone are sheer perfection. Also, Lanny Kibby's red bone and turquoise Winchester pen knives in stainless steel are absolutely wonderful as well. Finally, you can never go wrong with a good old fashioned set of Mogar black stag and mother of pearl knives. |

I use the Ascanio and Tamariz Knives, the best routine that I know is to Matt Shulliens and the molt versátil is the Fres Kaps routine. I like the magic with Knives and I have a act with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4tZ_kEHY......a_player
And Here is a video to Ascanio's routine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YDgCexxZ......a_player |

Rmendez, that's quite a collection you got there, nice stuff. You need 60+ hands to handle all them knives.
Rubiales, thanks for the links to see your work and that of the great Ascanio... Nice! Incidentally, love your coin work man and that "Ambitious Coin" is really cool. And finally just FYI... I just want to say "Thank you" as one of our Café bretheren contacted me as to my dilemma here. He reached out that he might be able to help me out and he did in a big way, better than what I had lost, something prominently displayed above in rmendez' collection. I am forever thankful and appreciative of this magical place and its members, "Magicians Helping Magicians." Yes! Thanks again and always my friend, you know who you are and God does too. -Mb

Thank you gentleman. Another great knife is Mogar's Hot Rod Knife which is ideal for an opening effect. It is more motivated than a hot rod and requires very little pocket space. I have a strolling gig tonight and will probably use it as my ice breaker. Comes highly recommended. A real pleasure to own and perform with. I pass the knife out for examination in my routine which still leaves them none the wiser At the conclusion of the effect I vanish the knife with a cigarette move and ask them what color they would like to see me change the knife into? Regardless what they say, I pretend someone said blue and reveal my empty hand saying that it simply blew away! |

We are all misdirected by the strength of the paddle move yet lots of cigarette effects or sleights can be used with the knives. Check Keith Clark. Ever tried a continuous production with the knives...?

Hey guys... after seeing this thread, I started playing with my colour changing knives and I came up with a really great idea for a routine.
basically, you start off with the gimmicked knife your right hand... show the audience that you have a white knife. and have the non-gimmicked white knife in your left hand, held/palmed between your palm and the middle of your middle finger. you can hold the knife there and it looks sorta natural... not great, but not that bad either. tell the audience that you can change this white knife into a black knife. then place your left hand over your right hand for about one second... change the colour of your knife under the cover of your left hand.. then remove your hand to show that it's changed colour. Repeat this a few times... hopefully the spectator will ask, "what's in your other hand?". Then you tell them "ok, you got me, I've got two knives, and I'm switching them really quickly". And show them the palmed white knife in your hand. The spectator might comment... "oh, it still looks pretty good, but I caught you on this one" or whatever. Then you tell them... "when I first got this trick, my switch was really slow"... so maybe leave your hand over the other one for a few seconds... or actually do a real switch (making sure not to flash). then say that you learned to do it faster. so show the white knife palmed in your left hand... wave it over the black knife to turn it white... then wave it back over to turn it black... then show the white knife still palmed in your left hand. so at this point in the trick... I think they are very convinced that they are two legitimate knives, and you're doing the illusion purely by slight of hand... switching one knife for the other under the cover of your hand (similar to the way the coin guys do that change). then, you can start to have some fun... and slowly make the switches seem more and more impossible. switch them back and forth under your hand, back and forth really quickly. but still making it seem plausible that it's just slight of hand. then you put the two knives in the one hand... then take the "white" knife out as you close your hand... then close your other fist around the knife... then say... "without moving my hands, I can make the knives switch" and just put your fists together for a couple seconds and show that they've switched. Then you can repeat that, but make them switch by only tapping your fists together very quickly (like what ros and monica from friends used to do instead of swearing if that makes sense to anyone). then, for a finally, make them switch through the air... maybe by just shaking your two closed fists. and then you can repeat the last trick except do the change of the gimmicked knife just by shaking it without closing your fists. anyways... I think this method builds up the effect. I see most people perform this trick by just making the knives change colours or change back and forth a million times... but if you make it look like you're just using slight of hand, and even fake being caught... it should get it more into people's heads that there's nothing special about the knives and they need to be watching out for slights, rather than attempting to figure out if there's a gimmick at work. I haven't performed this yet... but I might try it out tonight and see how it goes over. if this routine hasn't been thought of before, I think I'll call it the "colour changing knives revealed" routine. Because at first, people might think they're getting a reveal on youtube when I show them that I have a knife palmed in my left hand, and that's how I'm doing the trick. but then they'll keep watching and be shocked by the magic when they realize that the reveal of the palmed knife was part of the trick. anyways, if anyone else wants to try out a routine similar to this, let me know how the reactions are. also, I just have the basic black and white knives. if I wanted to get a nicer set, which one would be good? something in the $50 - $100 range or something. and also I want one that comes with a second real knife so that I can switch out the gimmick at the end. does the one with the USB drive come with a second one to switch out with the gimmick? or just the long one? |

I've always been partial to the Michael Skinner routine. Used to have the old VHS tape of the Master Teach-In series with him teaching his CCK routine....
I recently started the massive job of converting/burning all of our VHS tapes (family highlights, musical performances, etc...) onto DVD, and lo and behold found that I still did have that tape! Made a dvd out of it in about half an hour!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I tried my new routine and it went over really well! I had stopped doing this trick a while ago, but with my new performance, I'll be doing this one all the time. everything went pretty much the way I thought it would. I just have to make sure to wash my hands after eating chicken wings, cause one time I did the routine, and my hand was a bit greasy... but it still worked pretty well.
I did the trick to about 5 different people... and everyone pretty much guessed that there was a second knife in my left hand... then when I kept going with the routine... I got comments like "wow, you're really quick at that"... then when I was doing the last moves... I pretty much got silence and amazement when they realized they had no idea what the heck was going on and how these knives were switching places. |

Very good advice Adam. Classic example of leading them down the garden path before turning the sprinklers on them. One thing you said in particular that I couldn't agree with more is the theater that we, as magicians in show business, often fail to employ in our performances. I admire the way that you are offering the false explanation as the impossibility of the conditions in your phases continue to escalate. You are rationing the effect of your gimmick and using it very wisely which is why it is maximizing the impact of the effect while taking the heat off your apparatus as all good magic should. I am sometimes guilty of losing discipline and going straight for the jugular myself. Thank you very much for sharing this with us. It inspired me to re-examine what I have been performing mindlessly for years now on auto-pilot. Go forth and continue to conquer my friend.

^^^ thanks for the comment. it's definitely true that I'm getting a lot more out of the knives than I was before. I'm still working on fine tuning the routine... hopefully I'll film a video at some point soon to show you guys.
I'm wondering if I should hand out the white knife to a spectator to briefly examine. when I show them the white knife palmed in my hand, I can hand it to them, and say... "see, you can hide it in your palm and make your hand look natural" as I demonstrate with the black knife. and if they ask to see the other one so that they can try the switch themselves... I'll say "let me show you a few more of the switches I've been working on" and take the white knife back, palm it in your left hand, and continue on with the routine. alternatively, if you're not going to hand out the white knife for a spectator to handle briefly, you could use two gimmicked knifes for the routine which would make the switches look a bit better. |

Actually, it might be better to start with the gimmicked knife palmed in your left hand... hold the white knife in your right hand... show the white knife on both sides and hand it to a spectator to examine. Then, do a real switch for the gimmicked knife as your first move. with practice, it might actually end up looking pretty good. then you'll have the white knife palmed in your left hand, and the gimmicked one in your right hand, now you can continue with the routine.

Here's a video of my performance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx7TFYdZrUY any tips? comments? suggestions? when I put both knives in one hand and take one of them out, it's a bit slow and sloppy... normally I'm a little smoother at that, but I still gotta work on it a little more. any thoughts on the routine or aspects of the handling I could improve? |

Does anyone have a non gimmicked Sanders knife that they would sell? I need one .
God's grace rocks! It makes a good cups and balls routine look pretty boring in comparison.

Man. I sure miss my Mogar knives! 9/11 made SURE we have to be cautious with what we carry on a flight! Richard's collection above is WONDERFUL! I'd hate to have had THAT in my cursed foreclosure! I did have many wonderful collectibles to be sure.
I never expected to lose my knives at the airport! It's not a knife, but The Amazing Jumping Arrow gives me the satisfaction my knives used to . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bveiScAEW8&feature=related Doug |
