Everything You Wanted To Know About The Faro Shuffle
But Were Afraid To Ask!
By Dr. Brent Morris

http://www.magicinc.net/FaroLecture.aspx

The Faro Shuffle is one of those magic card techniques that has almost mythical connotations. Most magicians know about it, and know what it requires, but few can perform them reliably. There are many tricks that one can perform using this technique (or some of it's dozens of variations), but most fly under the radar of magicians because of their seeming difficulty. In his lecture, Dr. Brent Morris will De-Mystify the Faro Shuffle!

First you will get a brief History of the Faro. That will be followed by learning how to perform the Faro Shuffle, or help you polish your current technique. Finally, you will get to learn many faro-based tricks. The talk will end with ACAAN with Faros: Six Faros gets any card to any number!

In the words of Dr. Morris:
"I don’t want to flood attendees with scores of mediocre faro tricks, but I do want them to leave with several solid tricks they’re likely to add to their repertoire. A little math is needed for ACAAN, but this will not be a math lecture. I can talk math afterwards, but my goal is to teach some powerful tricks. Jon Racherbaumer’s “Mathematician, Psychic, and Magician” only requires a reverse faro of 8 cards, so there should be something for everyone!"

During Dr. Morris' lecture at TAOM, when he explained his “Flipping Miracle,” one person in the audience said, “OK. My registration just paid for itself. That trick alone was worth the cost of registration.”
[The cost of TAOM registration is about $170!]

Who is S. Brent Morris Ph.D.?

Sometime about 1955 Brent Morris was watching the Howdy Doody Show and saw Buffalo Bob produce a dove pan full of popcorn. He was stunned and decided then to become a magician! Later he was in the audience on an episode of Mark Wilson’s Dallas TV show and helped him do the cut and restored rope. Like Mark Wilson, he worked for Douglas Magicland while attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas. After moving to Maryland, he worked for Gino’s Restaurants as “Gino the Genii and also for years did the usual round of banquets and birthday parties.

While in high school, a life-changing event occurred when a friend taught him the faro shuffle and Alex Elmsley’s binary placement of the top card with faros. His doctoral dissertation at Duke University is on the mathematics of the faro shuffle, “Permutations by Cutting and Shuffling: A Generalization to q Dimensions.” He has published several scientific papers on the faro, received two patents for computer interconnections with the faro, and lectured on the faro at over 100 universities. In 1998 the Mathematical Association of American published his book, Magic Tricks, Card Shuffling, and Dynamic Computer Memories.
