I know that Mike Close is an excellent magician and I would probably buy these DVDs even if everyone said they were horrrible, but I would just like to know a little bit more about them and the effects on this set.
I can tell from the table of contents that the majority is card work but is there any coin or other material on this set. Thanks a lot in advance.

Looks like it's his old L&L video set on DVD with a different name. I didn't care for these. He's an excellent technician, but a bit dull. He takes himself soooo serious. You can see Mike Ammar falling asleep during the explanations.

Wow, I didn't get that impression at all. In fact, this set is one my favorites.
Anyway, odroj88: Chicken Teriyaki, 26 cents worth of change, and Too Ahead are coin effects. There is alot of card work, but there is also alot of closeup magic. Some of my personal favorites: Dr. Strangetrick (Card Warp) Rubiks Dollar Bill (Bill, Card, & Toothpick penetration) Frog Prince (Two Card Transposition story) Card, Forehead, & Salt Shaker (Card on Forehead) Red Blue Mama Fooler (Brainwave, Red Hot Mama) The Pothole Trick (Hole on business card)

This is one of my favortie videos sets, and I'm thrilled to see them on DVD now. Way too much great material to mention, but I can guarantee you that you will find material to perform and several ideas to expand upon. And Mike's conversations about magic theory with Ammar and Mead in between segments is priceless.

Ordered mine today from L&L and can't wait to get it. Good price for what you get.

I've said this before...
I bought the video with the Frog Prince trick and it was worth the price just for this effect. More importantly, the Juan Tamariz switch that is used at one point in the trick is brilliant. Recommended. |

Michael Close is without doubt on of THE best close up magicians in the world. Why? Because like his series, he is a WORKER. There are no pretnetions here my friends, all of this is audience tested in the real world and combines some of Mikes other hobbies.
Chris, why do you say Michael is dull and he takes himself too seriously? Look at Vernon, he shot down Eugene Burger for the way he put away his sponge balls. Fact is, if we all thought about our magic on a deeper scale like this, we would all be better magicians. This is what made Vernon, Vernon! Everything was coreogrpahed perfectly, almost like a small play. He knew all the parts and all the roles. Alot of Mikes stuff is the same. He constructs his routines well, they are all within the grasp of the avergae performer and they come with presentational ideas. If you ask me, you will struggle to find a better performer and true worker. The only people that come to mind who even match him are Gregory Wilson and Dave Williamson. Tell me, are you a working magician? Are you out there in the real world? OR do you sit in typing these kinds of abusive messages at people who have put their heart and soul into there work? Do you criticise because his explanations are clear, and the moves well considered? Let me guess, just because he wasnt sitting in his garden teaching the moves in a sheet or being kidnapped he doesn't make your standard? Magic videos are generally for those who struggle with the books. The performance is to show the proof in the pudding. Not to amuse simple minded magicians like you who watch them purely for their entertainment value. If you want to be entertained, go see a real life magic show or do something better with your time. As for the question, if these DVD's are the Too Close vids re hashed and had some more thought put into them then they are well worth the price. Quote:

Atleast Mike Close is having an honest try at teaching HIS plots and HIS routines. As for the new volumes, ever tried reading some books and learning all the stuff from there? Oh no, wait, the books wont entertain you in the effect so you would slam them. |

I am very impressed with the Mike Close tapes. While all of the routines might not be my cup of tea, I still learned a lot about routining and performing by listening to his reasons and rationale for doing a routine the way he does. And, while I also might not agree with all of his reasons and rationale, just understanding his structuring is an education in itself. For instance, towards the end of his "The Pothole Trick", Mike instructs on the proper time to remove (lower) you hand and arm after giving the participant "his" card. He explains why to do it a certain way and what to avoid and why. Attention to detail. A big thing? Yes. Things like this are what separates the men from the boys; the WORKING profession magicians from the wanna-bes. Mike's tapes are chock full of this type of advice and detail.
Good magic tapes are sometimes more than just "moves and methods". Mike Close is a worker--and it shows. Just my "IMHO". Mike

Yes, we all know the Vernon/Burger sponge ball incident. Vernon was right. He didn't say this to a kid at a party, it was to someone at the Castle. A good lesson for everyone. Magic is show business. You have to have thick skin to make it. Do you see Mike pulling any ounches in his reviews in magic magazine? NO, he doesn't. Don't worry about Mike-he can take it. Can you??? By the way, I hung out with Mike in the Houdini Lounge at the Monte Carlo. He's a funny guy.

I was present when Mike Close shot this video series, and I can't imagine anyone finding him boring. We had FUN all day, and his magic is sheer perfection, in my opinion.
Mike thinks very deeply about his magic and gets all of the details right. Technically he's so good that you tend to forget how fine his technique is. He's not in your face with it like some magicians. And, I love his piano playing as well. Why SHOULD it "fit" with the magic? He's a talented guy and shares both of those talents in the Houdini Lounge. If the truth be told, the average person that wanders in would rather hear live music than to see close up magic. And SERIOUS? Are you kidding? Mike knows more GOOD jokes than 90% of the magicians on the Café combined. And, he knows how to tell them. Mike is a LOT of things.... boring isn't one of them.
