That makes me miss the book & record sets, to be listened to on the Fisher-Price record player.

"Sarah McKinley's 58-year-old husband died of cancer on Christmas Day, only a week before the incident." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-16434328 I suppose it means nothing, it just seems a little odd to me.

I can think of something more dangerous. "There's nothing more dangerous than a mother with a shotgun." |

I was thinking of Poggio Bracciolini, to tell you the truth.

So the 21 year old mother with three kids, the last with a 17- year old, gets accused of possible statutory rape in the other thread, but the fact that the 18 year old had a 58 year old husband doesn't strike any bells for you. I guess the the problem with the first woman is that she didn't shoot anyone.
BTW, this is not to say that the woman didn't have every right to protect herself. I'm just pointing out the outrageous double standard in assumptions about these two women's lives.

I don't think there is a double-standard at all. These two situations are entirely different. I had not thought of the other thread in this context, but examining the two situations side by side is in fact illustrative.
The first woman you mention, had three children by (if I remember correctly) three men, with none of which had she entered matrimony, and the reason that the matter was brought up by the O.P. was (if I remember correctly) the presumption that other people -taxpayers- would be coerced by the State into paying for her choices. The second woman, who is the subject of this thread, bore one child to her lawfully wedded husband. As she made what evidently was, to judge by those aspects of her behavior which have been covered in the news, a thoughtful and considered choice to marry an older and, I hope, established man, I continue to entertain the hope that he provided for her and his child in his estate. Even if he had not, she seems to be the kind of woman who will take care of herself and her child without relying on the ministrations of the State, and I would not be surprised if she marries again. |

"a thoughtful and considered choice to marry an older and, I hope, established man, " -- an assumption with nothing to back it up.
I would think the default assumption about a teenager marrying someone and having a baby with someone 40 years older than herself is "yuck...what's going on there?" "she seems to be the kind of woman who will take care of herself and her child without relying on the ministrations of the State,"--another assumption with nothing to back it up. I think the default assumption here is that if there are any SS benefits or other government pensions or programs she and her child may need, an 18 year old single mother will not turn them down.

The age of consent in Oklahoma is 16. A 16-year-old can marry with parental consent.

Motives and character and judgments and everything else aside, I still see a difference between being single and having three childres, on the one hand, and having one child then then becoming single, through no fault of your own, on the other. If the widow adds two more lids while single, I think thte decisions become comparable.

Here in England it is not so simple; while the people “get it” the law here is an ass. There have been simlar cases where people have been charged with murder, the people on the jury have acquited them however.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
