Hi everyone,
This is my first post as a new member. I have just retired aged 77, after nearly 40 years as a full time pro' magician. 25 years under contract for all school holidays at a fun park called "Magic Mountain", here in NSW Australia. Outside school holidays I performed over much of Australia, also overseas, plus a couple of TV performances. I don't claim to be a big time name, just a ordinary middle of the road magician. I have lectured at conventions here in Australia on my secrets to being booked solid up to 12 months in advance, my maximum number of performances in one year being 403. If any magicians out there are seriously thinking of turning pro' or struggling to make a living from their magic,I will happily send my lecture notes free of charge to them. It will be my way of giving back to magic, which has been so good to me over the years. (I just hope this does not open a flood gate, or I could be aged 100 replying to them all.) email me boyddp@hotmail.com What do they say? "Old magicians never die, they only smell that way" Giving up performing was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I did not do so for any other reason than, I semi-retired and moved to a small country town called Leeton. I was still getting around three bookings a week within a 100 km circle of here. This was great, but every time we found something we wanted to go to, or travel up to Sydney to see the grandkids, there would be a booking preventing us going. At age 77 I'm on borrowed time, so reluctently I have hung up my wand to really enjoy being retired. Dave Boyd. (Magic Mountain's Mr. Magic) Australia. boyddp@hotmail.com |

G'day Dave
Welcome to the Café. I look forward to reading your opinions in this forum now that you are taking retirement seriously. I am situated on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales (just north of Port Macquarie)and I was wondering where the "Magic Mountain" was located - a google search made that info easy to find: "Magic Mountain is a theme park situated on the Sapphire Coast of Merimbula, New South Wales, Australia. It features a Diamond Python Roller Coaster, two waterslides ( Black Hole and the Doom Tube), Kiddie Splash Pool, Grand Prix Cars, Mini Golf, Magic Carpet slide, Toddler Town Cars, Triassic Park and a fantastic new performing arts stage the “Rocka House”. The theme park also has what is considered by some, one of the best Toboggan slopes in New South Wales which takes you almost a km downhill at speeds up to 63 km an hour. Magic Mountain was opened on 26th November 1983 and has since expanded, providing visitors with a variety of educational and exciting experiences. The park is a very popular tourist attraction and an asset to the local community." I expect that the weather would be a little warmer in Leeton toady than at Merimbula. Bob Latta (aka Troppo Bob) |

Thanks for the welcome folks.
Bob, your not wrong, it was hovering around 40 degrees here all day. I must admit I miss the Sapphire Coast, in fact the coast in general, but I have family here, so I'm kinda stuck. Will email you direct over the weekend. Dave |
