Here is a listing of illusions and effects and their authorized builders.
http://mattadamsmagic.com/authorizedbuilders.htm If you see changes that you feel need to be made, please email me at the email provided on the webpage. The listing is compiled from multiple sources around the internet and from some of my own personal research. It may not be complete OR accurate, but it is to the best of my knowledge. Now it's time for YOU, the Café members, to speak up and let me know otherwise! The intent of this list is for people to be able to quickly determine if an illusion they want to build is public domain. If the illusion in question is NOT on my list, then they are free to build it. Thus if you think I'm missing some illusions, please provide me the following: Name of illusion (created by XXX) Name of authorized builder(s) - only necessary if the creator is not the only builder Furthermore, I want justification as to why the illusion you want listed actually deserves to be on the list. Illusions in serious question (regarding authorization) will probably not appear on the list. Thanks for the help!

By the way, you could also PM me on the Café. Doesn't have to be thru my email. Thanks.

Hey, Matt why not make a reverse listing by builder then their illusions they are permitted to build. Just a suggestion.

OK, I PM'd this to Matt just tonight...but decide to float it here for immediate vote by the group...I propose Matt's idea be named "The Grand Illusion Registry". It about time and would be an awesome resource for all!

I've registered the domain name "IllusionRegistry.com" and am working to get it up and running. Eventually, I want to have it searchable by both builder or illusion. I also want to include illusionettes and illusions that "walk the line" so to speak. They'll be under their own category probably. A "for instance" may be something like Thom Rubino's Modern Sword Basket. He didn't invent the sword basket, but made some small mods to it (like folding walls into the base). So I'd detail the changes/upgrades that creators/builders claim so that people understand about that. Another piece could be the harness that Jonathan Pendragon designed. Anyway, this will get complicated fast, so we'll start with what we know and then build on it from there. But it's absolutely going to be a group effort. I'm obviously going to be willing to host the site and all that, but I'll need lots of input...AND NO FLAMING ON MY IGNORANCE. We are all here to learn and it's WAY past time to have a resource like what we are putting together.
Ok, I'm headed off to watch some TV cause I've been thinking too much this evening!

Hello Matt:
Just wondering about Mark Rose-Christie. Do you have a web site for him. I can't seem to find any information at all about him or the "Atomic Split" and"zig zag swop" illusions. |

Nice work Matt .. I was just thinking to myself today that someone should at least retype that old list from years ago.
Thanks for taking the time and getting the word out. We all need to move in the right direction, this is a helpful tool. Steve |

That website is: http://www.mysteryghostbus.co.za/ Looks interesting! Steve, thanks a bunch. Yeah, the initial list part is easy. I compiled several online sources to get the list I currently have. The cool thing is that I've already had two magic creators contact me about their having their works listed. I'd say that's an awesome start since it's only day 1! At first, we'll be governing this list as a community. But eventually, I hope that we can establish a set of rules for "registering" that will apply to all new registrants. Then it takes out the guesswork out of whether or not someone is truly an authorized creator/builder. I'm sure there will be lots of gray areas and issues to deal with so I'm starting with the hard-core truths and we'll go from there. This list hasn't been disputed in a long time so I didn't anticipate a lot of problems with it's posting (and there haven't been any). But as we grow the list, I'm sure things will pop up. Hopefully we will ALL learn about magic history and be better for it. Thank you all for the support. I'll do my best (and I know you each will too!).

Well, we've had almost 100% positive responses so far from the community! Thanks to everyone for their support! I've had 6 different creators/builders contact me to get listed and make suggestions so that is a very positive thing.
Here's one point made by one of the best builders in the business - he didn't want to LOSE business because he was not yet listed on the Illusion Registry. Just because he was NOT listed didn't mean he was not an authorized builder. Due to this fact, I've changed the wording of the Illusion Registry to better reflect our purposes. Additionally, I learned that these builders have their own community just the same as performers. If they are asked by a client to build a prop of which they don't own the right, they can typically pay the creator a fee for the right to build a single unit. In this sense, some of the top builders (Jim Steinmeyer, John Gaughan, Eric Olsen, Andre Kole, etc) are often authorized to build each other's illusions although they may not be typically advertised as the normal "authorized" builder. This is probably why many of these top builders don't list specific illusions on their websites - because they are actually authorized to build a great many of the illusions out there.

He Matt.
This is a good kick-off. As you know, your list is not complete at all. My advice to you: contact magician RAFAEL from Belgium. He knows almost everything about creators and builders. He can make this list, together with you, as complete as possible. |

Matt,
Per your last comment...one way to manage that on the Illusion Registry could be: Illusion Rights Owner: (Single Name of Owner or Maker.) Authorized Builder: (Name of Primary Builder) Licensed Builders: (N/A [if none], or list builders who are permitted to build upon payment of appropriate license fee). DIY Builders: (Not permitted or permitted under license) Question: If I purchase a "used" or "pre-owned" Illusion...does the license to perform and full-disclosure/full support come with the Illusion? If not...then what if I were to pay a "Support and Subscription" Re-Licensing fee (not equal to the original fee of course, but not zero either! You know...kind of like renewing or extending a warranty)? Does the 'Maker' then retrain me and provide me with the full-support? Just curious!

Sometimes they keep records of EXACTLY who's purchased their illusions so it'd be important to be on that list. A "for instance" is Jimmy Fingers - he's got a master list of everyone who's purchased a Magellan levitation from him. So if you get one from eBay, it MIGHT be legit, but it's harder to trace lineage if it hasn't been kept up with. But I'm pretty sure that people wouldn't turn down a "support and subscription" fee. Haha.

In my primary biz (Information Technology)...software vendors typically charge SnS (Support and Subscription) on an annual basis for their products. It entitles one to technical support, bug fixes, but also access to the newest version of the product as it becomes available.
Now....if the Illusion community wants to provide me a vig for introducing this important concept to them....I would not argue! LOL But seriously, it seems a reasonable approach on large or unique illusions to make sure you have transferred the license properly. Was actually looking at MagicAuction tonight and, quite frankly, it appears that practice is already firmly in place!

Summers props, the seller is responsible to contact Daniel. Also some inventors (eg D. Summers, W. Blaney, J. Taylor,...) must be contacted, if you sell a prop. A new contract will be made with the new owner before sale. |

Things are hopping! If you haven't seen our list, check it out at the link in the first post!
Our official website (IllusionRegistry.com) is due to go live sometime in mid-March, I hope. There's a simple list out there now, but it's not completely correct and I'm not going to be updating it until we are ready to fully publish the site. Time to get some data from you guys! ...I'm creating a separate posting for this

http://www.mattadamsmagic.com/illusionregistry.htm (the old page will still get you there for now) Also, please check out the public call for data thread here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=7&3

Seems that Austrailian magician, Tim Ellis, has been monitoring original rights to illusions. Do a check on the Café and google and see if you can join efforts.

The registry is almost useless without images or at least descriptions of all the illusions not everyone can recognize an illusion by its name or whose suppose to own it.
