I recently received 4 older effects created by Tony Baronio and Steve Dusheck, using string/Mardi Gras type beads as props.
The effects are pretty interesting, but the beads are quite old, and the connectors are pretty worn out (again, these were created some time ago). Here is a photo of the type of beads I am looking for. Finding beads *like* this isn't the problem. Finding ones that have this method of connection is. The photo shows that the end bead on 1 or both ends of each string of beads has a very small stem with a slightly larger rounded end. This stem goes into the plastic connector (a tube) that is flexible, yet firm enough to hold stems in each end. http://s280.photobucket.com/albums/kk183......1350.jpg This method of connection is a very simple, easy way of connecting and unconnecting them, which makes it efficient. I contacted Tony Baronio, but it has been some time since he has had them made, and he had no leads. The beads, btw, are 'fused' the the string and do not slide on the string. I've tried, Dollar stores, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Joanne's, Teaching Etc..., Party City. I'm sure there are alternative methods, but wanted to check here first - maybe someone knows they are not made anymore, or knows where they can be obtained, etc... Thanks in advance.

Have you tried going to a bead store. I've seen them in some of the malls here in my area.
You could also try contacting Steve on his web site, maybe he could help.

It seems the photo link didn't work. Let's try this (double-click it to enlarge):
http://s280.photobucket.com/albums/kk183......20Stuff/ Don't know of any bead stores around, but Claire's will be a 'last resort'. The effects are more Tony's than Steve's (I actually made the purchase through Tony's site - Steve had his name on one effect, and some notes in the intstructions. Steve and Tony are good friends, so if Tony doesn't know...

Your first link worked better. The image came up large.

Motown: yes, I just noticed. When I tried a few minutes after I posted it didn't work (on my computer, anyway). But the 2nd one did. Now they both do! Go figure.
Pete: thanks for the reference. Had not seen the trick before, glad you pointed it out, as aside from being an interesting trick, Pop beads may actually be a solution. One of the effects needs a strand of beads pretty scrunched up and hidden in the hand, and the nature of how the Pop beads connect may prevent that. But the others require only a standard amount of flexibility, and the Pop beads seem to show that in Dean's demo. Have to get some and see.... However, one effect does require the beads I am looking for. Just have to keep digging on that one.

Found some great mardi gras style beads at a dollar store. The connection method still at issue, but love the beads. Very lovely to look at.
I have a belt sander, so as a couple of the effects involve joining sections of beads permanently, it was easy to sand end beads of different colors to about half their size and joining them as one with contact cement. Thought about cementing small rare earth magnets to the ends that need to be connected/unconnected during performance, but as they will come close together, there's too much of a chance they will attract. Will look at some sort of clasp/hook connectors and contact cement.

Have you tried emailing Steve? He may be able to give you some advice on what to look for or how it might be altered....

Steve and I correspond from time to time, but I want to be judicious in asking his help and advice, with which he has been very generous.
That aside, as the original beads seem unavailable anymore, I do feel capable of addressing the situation, am enjoying the search, and may have found a very good solution today. See my last post and future ones as more of a blog entry that I hope others may get some benefit from in the future. Going to see if my solution(s) work tonight while watching Bama and LSU.

That's cool...i talk to Steve too and take the same tact with him that you do. I am really appreciative of the help he's given, and don't want to take advantage of that...
Let me know if your solution works out! BTW, are you in Bama or Louisiana? Just curious....

Neither. I'm a TCU Horned Frog, but as a kid I developed a bit of an affection for the Crimson Tide.

Basically, I found some nice metallic 'clasps'. Quite small. I cut the loop (used to attach it to a necklace string) off with tin snips and sanded the remainder off, going a bit further to flatten it out some for a larger gluing surface (the clasp is circular, with the magnetic portion flat, so I needed a flat side on the opposite side to glue to a flattened/sanded portion of the bead).
I'm in the process now of gluing them with contact cement. The good thing is the magnets are significantly stronger where they are supposed to attach, and much less so on the other areas of their surface, so much less chance of one connection clinging to another.

CRAP! Glued with wrong polarities TWICE!
Ok, the first time I didn't know. The second time I thought I had everything lined up correctly, but missed on 2 of 3 connections. Got it right finally, and will test tomorrow.

Works very, very well. Very pleased, and a nice, quick, pretty effect.
