Sharing a post I wrote for a physical comedy blog - examples of physical comedy in magic, including Voronin, Sylvester the Jester, and Tom Mullica. Hope you enjoy it!

If you like books check out

Physical Comedy Handbook by Rider Robinson.

I did quite a while ago.

As I get older my physical bits are not as large. These days I use more facial stuff and pauses. It's just as easy getting down, just not as easy getting back up, even though my best magic the last couple of years was vanishing 39 pounds.

Thanks Skeleton. The link somehow didn't appear.

@Harris: Robinson's book is wonderful.

I'm using "physical comedy" to mean that the movement carries more weight than the words. Doesn't necessarily mean that you do a pratfall! It means "clowning", but doesn't connote fright wigs and scary birthday parties. I'm a professional clown, and always have my "but-not-that-kind" speech at the ready.

Clowning is a great art that can be used to illustrate many emotions.

One of my heroes was/is Red Skelton. He could do use both broad and narrow brush strokes on and off the stage.(he was a painter as well)

Back when I lived in Reno, The Reno Business Association, asked me to create a mime routine to his "Pledge of Allegiance speech". It was my biggest audience at the University of Nevada/Reno stadium for a July 4th event. Mr. Skelton was scheduled and do to health concerns couldn't make it.

Physical Comedy Handbook by Rider Robinson.

The book is by Davis Robinson.

A dear friend and a very smart guy.

He teaches at The Celebration Barn.

A great place to study physical comedy.

Avner Eisenberg teaches there as well.

With physical comedy the line between funny and sad (in the pathetic sense) is one that is unfortunately oh so easy to cross.

Done well it can be both comedic and artful.... but it is unfortunately so easy to to do badly and once you've strayed to the wrong side of the line it's hard to get back.

Hammy physical comedy is very cringey. If it doesn't look genuine it looks stupid.
