Hopping halves by John Kennedy? I think you are confusing John F. Kennedy halves and Johnson's Hopping Halves. Do you mean Supercoin?

Little off topic but good advice. I'd actually like to see what others come up with regarding gimmicks.

So far we have:
Extractor
TT
UCCU
TKO

All great, although I do not own TKO yet. A good coin gimmick is always good to have as well like the hopping halves by John Kennedy. Nice set of coin gimmicks.
Any other thoughts? What don't you leave home without?

It's no magician fooler but honestly it will slay laymen.
Chris has a few gags if you choose to use them, to get the lighter out in play before the trick even begins.
I have even just loaded it onto a table during other routines, so when I ask for the lighter they beleive it's not even mine!
It's the best "card to box" version out there

TT
Red/Blue Backer Card (Don't think so? Get Dan Harlan's A Little R & B)
A Copper/Silver Coin
A good 50 cent Shell (Johnson's)

Add four regular half dollars, an English Penny (to match the c/s coin), and a deck of regular bikes and you will always have an act. Of course you must learn to use these weapons of mass entertainment well, but I just saying.

You should learn sleights before gimmicks. Why? You always have your hands with you to practice, and you will be able to handle gimmicks in a natural way if you learn sleights first.

Don't let the "amateur" part put you off. This book is for all magicians.
Hope that helps,
James

That's not a gimmick. Why not answer the question asked?

Overall I would say TT by far, however honorable mentions must go to the "shell", "topit", IT, and "roughing fluid" IMO

Good lord.

Here, I'll make it easy and useful:

Forget gimmicks, they're not going to make you an instant magician.

You need information first, period- and starting with Royal Road is only going to frustrate the heck out of you at this point.
That's like throwing the Encylopedia Brittanica at a third grader.

Get the following books, in this order:

Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic
Tarbell's Course

Then, once you've digested the contents, you'll have a good idea what type of magician/area of magic you want to work in.

THEN start looking at gimmicks, but not before you pick up two more books, both by the same author:

Bill Severn's Best Magic
Bill Severn's Magic Workshop

You can build for yourself gimmicks that are sold commercially for a fraction of the cost.

There ARE, however, gimmicks that you will use, but you need to know HOW to use them first.

Indispensible:

Thumb Tip
Sponge Balls
Silks
Rope

I thought we were discussing must have gimmicks on this thread, NOT books.

Xiqual, please try to stay on topic or contribute your thoughts on books in a more relevant section of the board such as Books, Pamphlets & Lecture Notes.

So, what do you think the best must have gimmick is?

Okay, then how about you offer a suggestion for a must have gimmick instead of belittling those of us offering useful advice? I have yet to see YOU bring anything to the table...

Regardless...

@Markygee: Just remember that gimmicks aren't going to make you a good magician without the knowledge of how to use them, and present them in an entertaining way. Best of luck out there!
