Hello,
I have just been looking at the work of Karrell Fox following a recommendation from Andy Nyman. Fox's work is simple but effective. Recommended. Danny |

That Andy is a smart guy.
Karrell is indeed a master of simple, but impactful magic. Having lived in Michigan, I had the opportunity to see and speak to Karrell many many times over the years. He was an institution at the Abbott Get-Togethers in Colon. Two must have books of his are Clever Like A Fox and Another Book. Fantastic material. Glad to see others are discovering Him.

For me it also raises the oft discussed question of book vs DVD/video. As a newcomer to magic I am not sure I would have recognised the strength of his magic from a book....but when I am more experienced I am sure I will do so.

I understand Danny,
I have fortunately had the opportunity to see Karrell perform and lecture many many times over the years. To me the discussion regarding Books vs CDs is more about the benefits you get from each. It's not a one or the other thing. I'm sure you'll make many more discoveries like the Fox book.

I sold all of Mr. Fox's books over the years and loved them. They are deceptively 'simple' in many of the methods and you really won't appreciate how good the stuff is unless you try it out.
One of my favorite, maybe 'the' favorite, publicity photo's of all time is Karrell in a suit standing with a pitchfork or hoe in the middle of a corn field. The caption is: Karrell Fox, a man out standing in his field. Yeah, he WAS the King of Korn. Best,

Brad,
Every time I look at one of his books and see some of the photos in them, I just laugh. Great memories.

Hi Brad,
Mr Fox was a genius. I love the simplicity and power of his work. If anyone can recommend any other older magicians currently neglected in favour of the new I would be grateful (also been looking at Billy McComb - also an Andy Nyman recommendation. Lovely performer. |

I have a couple, I believe, of Billy's books and they are great. Billy McComb was one of the nicest, most amazing magicians I have ever known. Just a wonderful person. I truly miss him.
Another magician of the same caliber and 'niceness' was Mike Rogers. I miss both. Best,

One person I would Highly recommend is Paul Curry and his book World's Beyond.
He'e the creator of Out of this World. No videos or DVDs though. I could give you some other recommendations, but it would be helpful to know what kind of magic you like. By the way, Karrell Fox does have a DVD: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S5984

Thanks Motown.
What kind of magic do I like....hmmmm. I like close up but am now looking at putting things together which could also be used for groups of up to 30 people. My magic development is something I am working hard on but is still very much work in progress. Best wishes, Danny |

Danny,
Check out Don Alan's work: Pretty Sneaky and Close-up Time are two smaller books by him that are easy to find. There's also a large hardcover book called "In A Class By Himself, the Legacy of Don Alan". In addition to the books, there's also a DVD that's a part of the Greater Magic Video Library. I think his material would meet your needs nicely. He's a great all around close-up guy.
