On 2012-05-01 21:59, slyhand wrote: Stop looking at me. Posted: May 1, 2012 11:15pm Glenn you are right. Amazing! 87 restaurants? You have LOST 87 restaurant gigs? Now that is an amazing statistic. I have to say that it is possible that I may not have been in 87 different restaurants in my lifetime. I have worked in countries all over the world, but 87 might be a stretch if I don't include McDonalds and that ilk. Not sure but I think I am right. So lets go with this. Everything you say is absolutely undiluted brilliance. You are the greatest who ever did whatever it is you do. Nobody knows more and anything anyone says that contradicts you is obviously nonsense. You are the master. People will be telling stories about you and you are legendary. No...beyond legendary. Exploits of your life will be chronicled in an anthem by Rush. We all just assume this. Can we dispense with the silly little contest now and talk about the table approach? Nobody cares about the little squabbles. Save it for a pm ok? That is what they are for.

I see, Avoiding the question? The question is simple DD when was the last time you performed a restaurant gig? If you were to ask me this question I would say last week. And yes, I have indeed booked and performed in over 87 different restaurants over the last 30 or so years. And your little spin of losing 87 restaurants has no effect on my performance record. It is just DD saying another cheap shot and in my opinion your very good at cheap shots when your losing an argument aren’t you?
Yes one of those clients was the Rock and Roll McDonalds in Chicago and because I performed there my picture (of me performing there) ended up in a magazine. I have had many different restaurant clients in many different states all over the USA. They were all different bookings and different kinds of places. My point - as it seems to go over DD's head is that different places require different ways of approaching a table. In one place they may want the magician low key and in another they may want someone outgoing and loud. I performed in one place and they had a table/bar set up for me. And the wait staff got them drinks from the regular bar. The magic table was set up to take care of the over/flow while people waited to get tables. As I said different places may require different approaches.

ZING! Right over his head Danny!
The goal Glenn is to perform in fewer restaurants for longer. I have been at my weekend gig now for 10 years. I have been at my Monday and Tuesday Night gig for 3 years now. I wouldn't be bragging about 80+ restaurants....I find that pretty sad. Just sayin'

What does when I worked have to do with an approach? All it does is prove your agenda. But to answer you and hopefully we can get back on topic, I had NY ACL replaced so it has been over a month.
Now what does this prove again? Can we PLEASE talk about the approach? Or better yet not talk? You were the one who brought me up. Obviously everyone knows you have some agenda about me. Keep it out of threads ok? Nobody wants to read it.

I don't know if it's good or bad to have 87 different restaurants on a resume. I've been at six different places over the past 25 years. Currently, I'm in my 19th year at one place....two nights a week. It's great that the owners value my service to keep me that long, but it, also, has it's down side. I've been at another place on and off for 12 years....currently off. My choice....it just quit being fun to work there. I'd love to have one or two other places to work....3-4 nights a week would be wonderful.
I guess my point is, Glenn, I admire your ability to close the sale. Being at 87 different places...you should put out a reference as to how to close the deal. I'd be interested in that. |

Jimmy Krzak used to work Schuliens with me. Guy was a master at almost every aspect of the game. We worked by request. But Jimmy was a social creature. He had an old time doctors bag. Had a hilarious line after he introduced himself.
" I know it is a bit strange having a guy running around a restaurant with a doctors bag asking how was dinner, but don't be worried." And to be more correct, I worked with him. Not he with me.

To be fair Glenn is a lot of things. He is a huge pain, but his chops are not in question.
He has technique to spare. I have NOWHERE NEAR the chops he has. But again lets talk the approach.

Ah, Jimmy Krzak....Sadly, I only knew him for a few years. I met him through Danny. The kind of guy that you meet for 5 minutes and feel like you've known him for 20 years. Had I known him for 20 years, I would have been a better entertainer....and funnier. Everything was funny to Jimmy. Like I said, only knew him the last few years of his life, but I really miss him.

Then I was working Two places a night - 4 nights a week. Back then I was single and made my living as a close up magician - and used the restaurants to book stand up gigs and other close up gigs. Since those days I am no longer single and I do still make some of my income from doing close up shows and restaurants. But it is only one of the incomes I have. I think the longest I ever worked a place was five years. The reason I may leave a place is because I find another place and when I find another place I ask for more money. I find it hard to get a raise - once your in there working it is hard to raise your price. So the way I do things is I find another place and ask for more money. But I don't leave a place unless I have filled up the week with three or more a week unless it is grad night season and then I don't do restaurants at all for two months. Quote:

At the interview I have a book that shows what I do. Also if I can I do magic for them at the interview. After they look through that I give them the free night - after the free night it often comes down to price. After I get the sale I like to have a meeting with the wait staff to let them see some magic (so they are not stopping to watch the show when I am working on the first day) and set up them selling me at the tables. Also I find it important for all the managers to see me work. This way I am not so much an interruption and if they want magic they tell the wait staff. I have that printed on my table tent. Because I do not like going up to the tables cold. I can and I have had to go up to tables cold in some places - but I do not like to. By the way 19 years in a place is a great record you must be delivering a quality service. You might say the way I approach a restaurant and the way I sell it sets up the way I like to approach a table. And that is low key and as a gentleman like Bert Allerton did at the Pump Room. Anyway that is the way I like to do things. However different places may need a different approach - mileage may vary.

Again you put me in the awkward position of having to defend him. Even though he obviously won't acknowledge it. Yea no agenda.
His final loads may or may not need work to fly past magicians. But 99% if not more of his work is foe non magicians. I am sure the loads are just fine. I do admit he is obviously tone deaf for what others say, and is sarcasm impaired. Glann, let it go.

I was being honest. And moving on works.
But it does bring up a point and again I will use Jimmy as an example. He did things that magicians NEVER thought would fly. Guys watched him and couldn't believe he got away with it. Much like the Schulies, Heba, and for that matter me. His "chops" were far from great. His ability to entertain and captivate and FOOL an audience was off the charts. I will take the second one any day. Glenn this does not apply to you as your chops stand up with anyone. As good as any and better than most. The idea of working for magicians vs people sparked the thought.
