You can tell by my number of posts and my questions how new I am. I have spent a lot of time searching teh web and really want to get a Die Box. I have had one good reccomendation from Bob1Dog. In the video below, the gentleman uses (what I think) is quite a neat die box. Do any of you know the:
brand? where to get it? the approximate value? Video => http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBtvLcOJxNg Many thanks Rik |

Hi Rik:
That die box is made by Practical Magic - I think they're in England. Their website is: http://www.practical-magic.com It's an unusual die box - I've never seen one like that. Jim |

Rik, did you phone the magic shop I gave you the information on? What I like about his is that the sliding of the die in the one he carries is louder than many of the ones I have seen, even though it's made in India; it's a nice box. While Mikame is a dynamite box, the noise made by the gimmick isn't that loud, and you really want the sliding effect to be well heard.
Also, I may have mentioned before, Michael Baker right here in the Café makes some of the nicest die boxes you can find. I just purchased one from him myself last summer. But more expensive than you should spend for a beginner. Unless money isn't a problem, then I'd PM Michael Baker! Best, Bob

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

You guys are so helpful, but you're going to "break the bank" of the old guy here.
Bob - did not phone your friend. I am hesitating until I really know what I want. I would love to see some pictures of the one you use. AfterEight - thanks for the link as well. I am a begginer and I want TOO much stuff! I love my 3D Rabbits I really like my Thumb Tips (Rabbit and the Hat silks are sweet) I'm getting pretty good with the Chop cup I got at Denny's in Baltimore I'm OK with forcing a card - I've watched "Forcing A Card - Magic Trick" DVD lots of times and practiced and practiced. Working on the red sponge balls Of course the Magic Colouring Book I always carry cards and rubbber bands But - I want a Die Box, I want a double load change bag with a zipper, I want a Jumpin Spots and of course I want a Pom Pom stick. Urrrrgg! At 65 years old I figure - who's got time to be patient? Rik |

Cap.Hook, yes, the value of the dollar has dropped considerably, spending almost $200 for a die box from England is a lot. If it is as stated made in India, then I think you should pass on it. The wood they use to make the props is India is some kind of filler wood, that splits at all the screw holes. You will be lucky if it lasts one showing.
Most of the magic items in the US are now made in India, don't waste your money on them. If you want a dye box, check out Babcock Die Boxes, but at almost $300 for some this may be not what you are looking for. The next dealer I would suggest is Abbott's Magic, call them to verify it is not a product made in India, as they carry their line of Die Boxes and Die Boxes made in India as well. Their items are made of quality wood and will hold up with use. For reasonably price die boxes, I would recommend this classic design with the double door feature. https://www.loftus.com/item/RE-0012 or this die box which is a copy of a Babcock model. https://www.loftus.com/item/SB-0001 I believe these models I have reference are made in China, not India, and have handled both. They will last longer then any made in India. These models can be purchased from http://www.stoners.com or your favorite magic dealer. They are priced at around $100. |

The Die Box shown in the Practical Magic link is the English-style Die Box, with 2 doors front and 2 doors on back. Sometime in the past, I bought an India version of the same style... not the best made, but certainly less costly and it does work. I used mine in shows for a long time. I'll do some searching online and if I spot it I'll post a link.
Also, you should do a search for the MAK JTL Die Box. It is a standard Die Box (2 doors top, 2 doors front), not terribly expensive for what you get, and it has a nice additional feature that allows you to place the die(?) in the box, while the front faces the audience. Nice thing about this box is that it is Plain-Jane, no extra do-dads like double doors that can foul up, red with a big white die, and a gray (not black) interior. The shell is well-made, too. Empire's Die Box is not bad for the bucks. Not a jewel but no real reason to invest a ton for a first purchase, especially if you plan to use it rather than shelve it and just look at it. Don't forget to look at used magic sites like Magic Gizmo, Ron Allesi, or Magic Auction. You might check Ebay and Amazon as well. You can usually save considerably buying a used prop. Thanks for the plug, Bob. I don't have any more of mine in stock at this time. Speaking of loud sliding noise... someone just sent me a GM Die Box to check out. This thing sounds like it has a sliding brick inside. Really a nice clunk!! It is however, scarce, and probably quite expensive. Oh, well... ~michael

Hegblini - Might this be the Hudson style die box you mentioned? http://www.topsmagic.com/product_info.php?products_id=29157 If so, the add reads " Well Made DOUBLE Door Die Box " Does that mean front and back doors or just the two "double doors" on the front? Sorry for such simplistic questions. I do not have a store to run off to so I can look at these things, Thanks Rik |

How about this one at Abbotts. While I don't have it I have seen it demoed and it shows well and has the extra side and back doors. I will soon replace my cheap one with it. I like the Idea of just a cube not a die. I know the die works and is not questioned but really, who has a giant die like that?

Rik, that Die Box is the most basic you can find. It only has two doors. The two front doors. There is no top doors or back doors. It has an OK sliding sound and one door is gimmicked. The door gimmick is released by the twist of the door knob (releases it or picks it up). It is a fairly small prop (about 6.25 inches x 3.25" x 3.5"). It is as basic as they come. The die and shell are well made.
It is OK for the price. It will play for a small venue (parlor). Again is about as basic as you can get for a Die Box.

On 2012-01-14 08:23, Capt.Hook wrote: Yes, Loftus Novelty had the Hudson Die Box from years ago, made available again. I like the box for the small size and the ability to show the die in the box at certain times. Now there is no back door or top door. Double Door is referring to double gimmick door to show the die in the box. The one at the local magic shop is exactly like the original. This is a good die box that will serve well for small in home shows. If you are looking for more features, higher prices come with more features. There are pro's and con's with every die box, as you can get one feature, but then not able to have another. Having performed the die box for years, I see no advantage to being able to look clear through the cabinet. It just adds to ackward handling on the performers part. When it come to size, the big it is the harder it is to hold and operate the doors. Thus that is why the one you originally asked about put a handle on the top. The other box I referenced also has the double door feature as well. As you may have noticed everyone has their favorite, but I tried to advise you of the ones I would consider if in the market for a Die Box. If you want a certain die box, then save your money and get the one you want and know you will be happy owning and performing. Babcock boxes are the finest made, and the price is aroung $300.00. check them out at http://home.nwi.net/~magicmel/ |

Another vote for Mel Babcock's boxes. There are certainly less-expensive boxes on the market, but buy a box from Mel and it's an investment. It will literally last a lifetime and then some.

The blue box does not have the sliding gimmick. It's a nice box though. I sold one here on the Café, (the color didn't suit my style) and it was snatched up quickly.

Looks like I am saving for a nice Die Box. Now - I guess the next quest is to find a double load change bag with a zipper that I can afford. I think this is the one Bob "suggested". http://www.vikingmagic.com/?nd=full&key=2035 |

Here's a link to show you three die boxes; the beauty made by Michael Baker, the Mikame and the green one is the cheap India box. I use the India box in my shows, hence the bruised appearance. It's solid as a rock, made out of solid wood (not cheap pressed wood as wmhegbli suggests), and the "sliding" action sounds as heavy as a brick, as Michal suggested. It ain't pretty, but it works like a charm. The other two I've used for friends, but in all liklihood I probably won't use Michael's in a show, especially around kids; it's like a piece of fine furniture!
https://picasaweb.google.com/11692563626......t=email# p.s. the Kovari Pom Pom Pole (called the prayer stick) is one of the best you can get (my opinion only)and the price isn't bad at around $70 or so from Kovari direct in the UK, plus about $12 or so for shipping.

I have an Empire die box and I love it. It was made in India (I think), but it's a very solid prop. I think I paid about $100 for it. It's large, has a nice clunker, and has the double door feature.
Don't (let me emphasize DON'T) buy a cheapie die box - save your money and get a good one. Otherwise you'll just end up using the cheapie for awhile and then buying another (better) one. Jim |
