I'm not sure if this is the best place to put it, but I was just wondering on how you all thought the new series of the Magicians is?
Personally, I think that it isn't great. Too many camera tricks and angles, and just too much over the top magic. Why can't we just have a program which gets lots of skilled magicians to show their tricks instead of turning it into a talent show? |

I actually got stopped on the street and asked to be on the show as a spectator - I said yes as I thought it would be interesting, they were asking me to fill in forms etc and then I mentioned that I was a magician myself and them strangely 5 minutes later one of the producers came over and said that one of the cameras was broken and it was going to take a long time to fix - coincidence?
I think that says all we need to know about the show! |

It's kinda entertaining. Probably moreso for a lay audience. A lot of the illusions are samey and I assume requires a lot of pre-show. But still I find it enjoyable and it can only be good for magic surely?

Haha, Sounds like a coincidence!
Like for tonights (14th Jan) show, when B+S Car fell off, that wasn't magic, that was rubbish when it exploded. Magic should be about sleight of hand, no camera tricks and real reactions. |

I had tickets to go, went to Shepperton but got turned away as it was over subscribed (good old Applause Store), so off I went home to watch it on TV.
Here's a few thoughts from two families. Barry & Stuart were entertaining - the guillotine illusion was the best thing on the show. Latimer's illusion stuff was poor, especially since he really is a great magician - what was the deal with the box ninja illusion. We all thought it was poor. Overall, we did not enjoy it much and thought a lot of the magic was lame / poor / cheesy etc. I wanted the show to be good, but thought Penn & Teller was much stronger. Let's hope it gets better. Agreed, yeah(:
The bit with the box, went wrong when the ring got dropped(: I don't think the guillotine illusion was that good, I did like the Latimers one with the shirts and the car production, I thought that was neat, but it was all summed up for me when that Swedish man came on, and did some basic, close up, interactive pickpocketing magic with those two audience menbers - highlight of the show for me. I don't know why you have to vote for which "group you don't want to see face the death defying stunt which isn't death defying as its perfectly safe" - it almost gives magic a bad name. |

Chris, this is not surprising. When producers do free sceenings of movies and TV shows in Hollywood, the first thing they ask is if you are in the entertainment industry. If you are, they don't want you. They like normal people. Of course, a lot of guys lie (I have!)
They don't want jaded people in the crowd. Next time don't mention you are a magician.

I enjoyed it - but too long.
Some highs - some lows. I enjoyed the Pete Firman levitation best. And the bandstand illusion. Yeah, it was so - so.
Dodgy camera angle at one time which COMPLETELY revealed the Guillotine illusion. I think that Penn and Teller was a LOT better. Kyle |

Interesting how the producer (once he knew watch stealing was taking place) kept giving instructions to film the wrists of the specs. NOT very magician friendly.
I disagree abpout the car going over the cliff. Escapology has always been a greatr part of magic. The only problem with this was that just before it started we saw Craig Revel in the effing studio! Thus we knew he had escaped. Duh!!!!! Surely SOMEONE can think in the production team?

... oh and briefly. What IS Latimer thinking about? You get a gig on Sat night on BBC 1 prime time. You're the world champion. What do you do?
Well you do a 'do as I do' from page one of every magic book ever written. Every working close-up magician started off doing 'do as I do' at their earlier pro gigs.... then stopped!

If Craig was really not in the car, then they would have just let the car fallen off the cliff - why did they have to add tacky and rubbish special effects?

This show is awful and I highly dislike it. Yes it is good to bring magic back into the public eye, but quite frankly, it really pees me off that people on there are doing poor stuff, when theres people outside of television etc who do fantastic, MAGICAL effects - not fake rubbish.
This isn't magic, this is money-making junk. |

Having Gone to the Preview of this Series (Before The Camera's Started to Roll) I had high hopes for this Series
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/searc......=7315186 The Problem was the New Series that Promised " New Magic and Mentalism along with the Death Defying Forfeit" just did not live up to the Hype All the Magicians are Excellent in there own right, but the current obsession that you have to have a Z List Celebrity on every show drags down the whole production The Other issue is the Producer /Director does not appear to have any experience in how to shoot a Magic Show with constant cut always to film the audience which spoils the whole effects, I found Laser effect spoilt due to the constant cut always , The Problem I think it is made by the same people that make Come Dancing so it appears they do not have any experts on hand. If you compare this with Fool Us the Backroom People knew what that was doing and the show was shot from the audience point of view It's a shame as this could have been a great series if they would have followed what they did on the Preview Night http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/searc......=7315186 |

The show is a hit in ratings terms.
The focus groups and social media feedback love it. Audience research shows that viewers love it. It's going to do amazing things for the careers of three really talented magical acts. It's a format that's been sold all over the world. This show is a win win win no matter what you guys think. |

Sorry guys - no one cares what the amateurs on teeny tiny niche forums think. While you're all here whimpering bitterly, the acts are out there making their careers and fortunes.
I've got no problem with people saying that the show is not for them. But what happened to being supportive? Some of the posts in this thread are hideously juvenile. |
