Mr. Kaye,
I am 17 years old and love the art of magic. I have gotten serious about it ever since this past summer, where I landed my first gig (volunteer) in July. Then, I performed at many libraries where I live (volunteer) and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a gig booked every month through December. I performed for a lot of kids and a few adults. Eventually, this led to my first paid gig. I also enjoyed that experience. However, after that paid gig, I have been lost as to what to do next. The paying gig was a one-day event. I don't think that I want to do more library gigs, either, unless they start paying a bit of money. However, I will perform for the libraries if necessary. Anyways, I live in a neighborhood where magic is not prevalent. The SYM does not have a ring around here, and I am not yet old enough (or have the money....no job) to join the IBM or SAM rings. There are no professional magicians to talk to, so that is why I want your personal opinion. What should I do next? Thanks! |

Don't worry about being paid now. Call every club, group, cub scouts, preschools, and offer free shows. Even the libraries. Do every show you can do, for free. This will do 2 things. It will get you tons of practice and experience. So when someone does pay, your show will be much better. Second, you will be seen by lots of people who may become customers. Your free shows will be done with one stipulation: everyone must get your flier, premium, or promo materials.
Videotape every show. Watch it and hone the show, fix your mistakes. You will get better much faster is you watch your shows and correct your errors. If you have a great show your customers will be calling and paying you plenty. This is the investment part. Write back after you have done 30 shows.
