I know this might sound silly when people in this section are talking about family illnesses, but I just had to have my dog put to sleep. He was a golden retriever and he was a good dog. I'm pretty depressed about it.
Our girl got him when she was 4 and she is also really upset.

It's not silly. Our pets may not be human, but they are true members of our families.

When I had to put my last dog to sleep I was also extremely upset about it. On the other hand, as I watched him take his last breath I realized that his pain and suffering was leaving him, and I knew I had done the right thing.

Keep your heads up, and take care of that girl.

That's how it was with him too. He was suffering from a bone tumor in his skull. I really didn't want to take him in but he had a seizure and when I took him and he got the shot and was going to sleep I knew he felt better.

Thanks.

Hi Critter:

I just want you to know I understand what you're feeling now; I've had to put to sleep both my beloved dogs the last couple of years. I truely loved them.

That's awful - I too know the feeling. My pets have always been more like family members and it's incredibly tragic when you lose one. Golden retrievers are amazing dogs too. I'm so sorry to hear it...at least he's resting peacefully now. Always harder on those left behind, but he's healed now Smile

Thank you.
I hated bringing him in but once it was done it felt like he was at peace.
He's had a bone tumor on his skull for a while. We figured he'd have a bit longer than he did but then he had a bad siezure last night so we had to take him in.
He was the lead dog of the family so the Scotties are going to be rudderless until they get used to him not being around.

I empathize with you and am sorry for your loss.
My son has a service dog and though not human she is a part of this family.

There was a lady in one of my classes who had a service dog. Those dogs are amazing. I always thought of them as just workers before, but this dog was still a dog. When she was taking notes the dog (Buster was his name) would sniff around my backpack like any other dog. His owner even gave me permission to pet him when he wasn't busy.

Service dogs are proof that there is a special relationship between humans and dogs (as if any science were necessary). But if you are into science, the special relationship between dogs and humans is well established.

I suppose (ahem!) that there might maybe could be a similar-lesser-sort-of-in-the-neighborhood relationship between humans and cats. I'm not judgmental.

But dogs and humans? FAMILY TIME!

Critter, how's your girl doing? She holding up to the loss?

She's been at her biological Dad's place since the day after so we'll see when she gets home tonight. Thanks for asking.
Also, his ashes are supposed to be delivered today.

They dropped off his ashes and everybody cried. Otherwise, Bee seems to be handling it well.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this--the last battle--can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
Don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears
You'd not want me to suffer, so.
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me til the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
it is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close--we two--these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Critter, I can relate.

Before I became homeless last year I had a cat named Mindi. I left her with my landlord before coming to Maine from Florida. He recently informed me she died. That cat was my best friend! I don't know if I can get another cat again.

My ten year old black tomcat Spooky died several years ago, and that devastated me! I just can't take losing a pet any more. As a single guy, it's tough. Being alone after that takes getting used to. Sorry for your loss Critter!

Thank you Doug. I feel your pain as well. My Sphinx, Talma (named after the Queen of Coins, of course), is the most amazing animal there's ever been. I hope she lives forever, because I don't know if I could handle that one.
