As I'm getting to grips with card magic I've been looking into the ultragaff deck. Also looking at buying some loops just for some added (seemingly impromptu ) levitations.
Any other suggestions / things to steer away from? |

Hi mismatchgaz, welcome to the Café!!
If its card gaffs your asking about there's a whole load of them out there. It really would depend on what would suit your style, are you looking for classic card magic or more street style card magic effects? There is something called the Ultimate Card Control Utiity (UCCU) which is sold as the Any Card to spectators wallet effect that has recently come out. Although ive not used it myself most are raving about it. There's an amazing amount of information on these forums. If card magic is your thing check out "The Workers" forum. AA

Welcome to the Café, mismatchgaz! Also, welcome to the wonderful world of card magic! Card magic is one of my favorite areas of magic, and like you, at one time I thought I had to buy trick decks or other gimmicks to make my magic good. After experiencing some of this myself, I would recommend a slightly different path.
My advice is that you should get some [good] books on card magic. When I was first starting in card magic, I wasn't aware of what kind of effects were possible with a regular deck. When I first saw some impromptu card magic with a regular deck, I knew I had to learn that magic (gimmicks definitely have their place, but it's hard to have them for "impromptu" performances). There are several threads here at the Café detailing what books would be good/appropriate for beginners. Since I mentioned that I saw impromptu card magic, here is a link to Mr. Harry Lorayne perfoming some of the items in his books. One of his books, the Classic Collection 1, is one of the first books dedicated to impromptu card magic which I purchased. It's still one of my favorites. Also, here is another link to a review of this same book with some additional performances. Anyway, books tend to offer better value and offer you the ability to perform awesome card magic when handed any regular deck. Good luck, and let us know what you end up doing! |

Agreed. Gimmicks and special cards/decks are great, but nothing matches skill and knowledge. Books are the best as they allow you to learn without influencing your performance style. DVDs can often make a viewer emulate what he or she sees on the recording verses developing their own style.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Hi Mismatchgaz,
I agree with Dr. Jk and will add that Card College and The Royal Road To Card magic are excellent resources to learn great card magic without Gafs. I agree with the above post. In fact, get Royal Road To Card Magic as well as Encyclopedia Of Card Tricks.
As for props not related to card magic, I'd say get some sponge balls, half dollars for coin tricks and a set of Cups & Balls (make sure the cups are of decent quality (at LEAST $40). For gaff decks, you can always look into marked decks and stripper decks, but as was said above, if someone sees you doing a trick that can only be done with a stripper deck and then that same person hands you his own deck to do the same trick the next time he sees you, you won't appear to be "magical". |

Card College is a must. Card College 1&2 are available on a DVD and are excellent.

Getting a book or dvd series(Card College, Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Magic, Royal Road, etc) would be better in the long run than buying a gaff deck.
Having said that, getting a gaff deck such as the Packet Killer Gaff deck may just inspire you to learn a new sleight or two. |

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've started reading RRTCM, and I'm going to look into a good arsenal of tricks with a normal deck first.
Loopback: as you said about gaff decks. I saw a few vids of Daniel Garcia using the ultragaff deck and it was nice to see the gaff deck adding a little twist to some tricks. |

Have a coin penetrate the cellophane of your new card deck, and do two other effects via Striking Vanish. Impromptu! Taught on David Williamson's unusual and mostly advanced "Magic Farm" DVD. This trick requires average practice, the others...a life time? With the trick, you could add/begin a "Coin Bite" or other Gaff'd coin in a prior visual Ice Breaker, then say "yeah, It's a special coin, watch". Then do Coin Through Cellophane! You just rung-out your Gaff and could give a dupe out for inspection, if you choose. Then do a Card trick, why not?

Hmm coin through cellophane. Not seen that done before. Definitely going to track that one down.

Also, Royal Road to Card Magic can be (and, in my opinion, should be) purchased both in DVD and book format. The original book, when followed without skipping (or at least much skipping) is a wonderful course. The DVD with R. Paul Wilson, can't speak for the other versions since I don't own them, will provide you with both visual assistance, presentational tips and some variations from the original techniques, most of them helpful.

I also felt that I needed some cools gimmick when I started out. It kinda made me feel like James Bond with a lot of gadgets. Then someone asked what that weird string I had in my pocket was and then I started considering focusing on sleight of hand. I'm glad I did.

Your own mind and a simple deck of cards can be the two most useful and stunning props known to magic.

Your question is a route to wasting a lot of money. The gaffs/gimmicks you need are the ones required to do the trick you have seen/love and will perform. The rest is fun (if you have limitless funds) but otherwise avoid.

For 10 gaffed deck effects, you need 10 decks...
After learning a few basic card handling techniques, like double L, and false shuffle, controlling cards to top or bottom of the deck, you really will be on your way. But I started out that way, everything I did was self working. I still do like an invisible deck, and keep a Svengali deck in my case too. But for spontaneous magic, I keep one blue back deck, a totally stacked deck, and a red "normal deck" for other stuff (The red one has the four aces on top of the deck), and one deck of cards with multicolor fanning backs to flourish and to get people's attention, in my sport coat jackets. If I'm feeling loaded down, I leave out the fanning deck. The Doctor
