Writing about Toshiro Mifune in another topic reminded me of the comic "Usagi Yojimbo." Anybody else ever read that comic?
It's fantastic. One of those comics that's so great that it should be considered essential literature.

Is that the thing about the samuri rabbit? That was so cool once I realized the "funny animal" concept was being treated seriously and "people" were actually getting killed within the story!

Yeah it was. When I first saw it I was like "Who wants to read about rabbits and rhinos?" But then it's just straight up samurai adventures with a healthy dose of feudal Japanese history. Just like you say.

Ahh, Stan Sakai!
He also did lettering on Groo the Wanderer.

Was first exposed to him via good old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The original TMNT toon was where I first saw him too, but the comics were so much better. Not that the toons weren't awesome.

I liked Usagi. There was a wonderful touch of whimsy and it never detracted from the impact of the deeper moments. And of course the artwork was exceptional. It remains one of the top B&W books for me, along with Love and Rockets, Journey and Elfquest.

On a tangent, I was a card-carrying Cutey Bunny fan.
