There's no need to say the cards are "sticky", everyone know and could see that one card is missing...
Where I play, when one deck is short we just ask for a new one and say "new deck!" openly telling to the players why we switch to another deck. Why being so "cautious"? I must admit I don't clearly see the point... Personally, I prefer to know why a deck is changed (scratches, short, worn, etc.). For instance, if the reason is because one card is missing, probably one guy took it out of play. |

Arnold, theres Millions at stake.... why cause a commotion.... cards go missing all the time.... except the main reason is not because someone took it out of play... I'm speaking about in casinos.... You should play poker in a casino sometime and learn something...

In all the years dealing ive never had a card go missing on me. I have however found an odd backed card in the deck I was using. if a card is missing we, just notify the floorperson and tell them we need a setup and that's it. the floorperson will then check the deck himself and/or ask the dealer what was wrong with the deck.

90% of all "missing" cards in the casino are actually not missing. They are cards that stuck together or were not counted properly the first time. It only makes sense to have this procedure to avoid commotion until it is confirmed by a supervisor that a card is really missing.

@iamslow,
I wrote "where I play", I gave you my context, which explains why I am surprised about that procedure. There's no need to be acrimonious with me. You could have explained gently like The Dowser did. Anyway, again, I don't clearly see why a missing card would cause a commotion. One card is missing? One back is scratched? One card is worn? Is there a crease? Just get a new deck! @dowser When a card is really missing, you tell it to the players? |

Arnold
The integrity of the game is a most thing to fellows who run the game. A missing card evokes suspicion that cheating is afoot. Missing cards can cause murders. I have actually seen fellows strip searched when the deck is discovered to be short in private games. You don't have a game if the game loses its integrity. I would not have a game if it was thought bent in any way. Fellows would find another game. Why is there a card missing? Is someone holding out! and so on. Do you follow?

I follow you, tommy.
I just have never met guys like that. I even remember a famous TV Poker show (was High Stakes Poker?) where, all of a sudden, a player finds a card on the floor and gives it back to the dealer while everyone around the table didn't give a ***! I've met guys almost getting nuts for a tiny scratch on the back of one card! But, so far, I haven't met someone able to kill because such a thing. Depends on the money in the middle I suppose... (or the type of guys you play with). As a house owner, of course you have a different view, integrity of the game is crucial and nothing weird should be suspected, I understand. |

It is not hard to figure out what is going on if the deck is checked twice, then the other deck, then the rack and the floor. Like I said, it almost always never gets that far as most cards are really not missing. The one time in the last decade when a card actually went missing, the machine started flashing the red light, the dealer called his supervisor and started to deal manually, the supervisor simply reset the machine where it red lighted again a few minutes later and stayed that way for several hands. Another supervisor came and reset the machine without counting the cards either and finally when it red light again they counted. A call to surveillance revealed that the dealer dealt an extra card to a patron who decided to leave the table with it. |

All the tables in our room are equipped with shuffle masters. its not uncommon for the red light to go on and say that one card is missing. it happens all the the time, our procedure is if the red light goes on, you must put THE SAME deck back in the machine. the machine then recounts the deck and the green light comes back on. like I said though, ive never come across cards missing, but that's in a casino of course, and we have certain procedures for when it actually does happen. home/private games would be different, I'm guessing.

@tony45 yea the Santa "Flea" sounds about right, haha...ive played there a couple of times. last I heard, the shuffle masters can go from 10,000 and up. ill ask my floor and double check though. I think we actually own our shuffle masters in the poker room. ive never worked the series, but I might do it this year just for the heck of it. they wont have shuffle masters equipped so its a good place to keep the chops up.

They rent them for about $500 a month as I recall. There was a scam with them in China not long ago in which the shuffle masters were switched in for ones that contained spy cams that tramitted pics of the card order. There was a large crew of about 50 people involved. I am not sure if it involed poker though and I think it was Chemmi or something.
