My wife, Kristen Johnson and my Mother-in-Law, Sunny Johnson will both be there. Sounds like a great convention. Sorry I'm missing it.

Kevin, too bad you can't make it. WCM is one of the best regional conventions around. It will be good to see Kristin though. Hanging out with you guys at the Battle of Magicians in Canton, Oh. a few years ago was the highlight of that convention.

WCM is my favorite magic convention and was the first convention (1999). Mike has put together some awesome talent this year so if you can go then don't miss it.
I'm so sad that I can't be there, but my performance schedule will not allow me. Please put some post on the Magic Café on the highlights of WCM 2012.

I was just notified that our own RING 35 President, Winston Helling Jr., won the Close-Up Competition!
Congrats from RING 35 members in Birmingham, AL. Sorry that I could not make it this year, but our Ring is well represented.
Be remembered for performing what looks like MAGIC, not skill.

James and Bob, Winston did a great job! He deserved to win.
Here are some of my other thoughts on the convention I'll start with the cons: Registration is ridiculously slow and bothersome. I had to go to one place and get my show tickets, then take those and get my badge (which I had to fill in myself) then I had to go to another line to get my free bag they were giving away. It should not be this difficult. I understand that at this theater you have to go to the box office to get your show tix. Fine. But then once I stand in line to register, they should have everything ready for me. A packet with the program, badge, Swag bag, etc. And please have the badges pre-printed with our names. This slows the whole process down and during the convention you cannot read some peoples' names because of their handwriting (mine included). The auction on Thursday night is always fun and they have a lot of good stuff. But it takes FOREVER. So many of the items have a reserve, I think they should tell you the reserve up front and start the bidding there as to save time. People complain every year about the close up contests and shows being held in the giant theater where most of the people cannot see. So this year they had 3 separate rooms set up. Two at the theater and one at Ramada Inn next door. This was not a con for me but I heard a lot of other people mention they did not like it. But I give the convention kudos for trying to make it better. The rooms were packed and standing room only, so if you did not get there early you still could not see well without standing. I do think it was better than in the past and I am sure they will continue to tweak it. Now for the good. We were given discounts to the Hatfield and McCoy dinner show for Fri and/or Sat. It was more than 1/2 off. The show and food were both great. As matter of fact I went on both Fri AND Sat. It was great to see some new faces in the dealers' room. There was a nice variety including illusions for sale. I saw a lot of folks carrying bags full of magic so hopefully the sales were good for the dealers this year. The talent was really good. Shin Lim blew our minds in the close up show. I can't even describe how magical it looked. I would have liked to have followed him to all three room so I could have seen it three times. Bargatze was funny as ever (although he did not perform his straight jacket of death which is my favorite routine). David Kaplan received a standing ovation in the Saturday night show. He kills!!! And he is such a nice guy. Oscar Munoz gave a great lecture and was wonderful MC'ing the Friday night show. And of course, there was Johnny Thompson. A true legend. Overall this was a very good convention, as usual. |

Michelle and I had another great time at WCM 2012. Thanks to all who make it happen every year. We arrived on Wednesday and caught the show at the Comedy Barn where my old friend Danny Devaney, who I toured Ringling Circus with, is a new cast member. ROTFL funny. Also honored to meet Billy Baker who has been part of the cast forever as his character "Elwood Smooch". Very nice man and uber talented, too.
Thursday we did the tourist thing in Gatlinburg and it was a beautiful day. Friday and Saturday we loved all the shows. Friday night with Oscar as MC and all the cast set the bar high for Saturday nights production. However I am partial to the Saturday night show with Dave Kaplan, Tomsoni & Co. and all the rest of the great cast. Bargatze had some very funny bits and kept the show moving along. Close-up show was stellar, 3 room rotating round robin ... our room finished with Shin Lim who left us all speechless. Very powerful magic. Overall some things ran long, some things started late but no one seemed to mind. I believe this is their 37th annual event sponsored by the Local IBM Ring and they deserve a tremendous ammount of thanks for keeping it fresh. Wished I met and been introduced to more from the Café' however there is always next time. I am your very own Seaside Showman, out of Myrtle Beach, SC. Yours in Magic, Captain Mike ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
