I was having this conversation with Donna today over breakfast. She's a football fan and I'm so-so except when the 49ers are getting close to the Super Bowl. However, even she was commenting that coverage starts today at 10:00 with "The Road to the Super Bowl" and then the pre-game show, and finally the game. I pointed out what the news director at a TV station told me years ago: it's just a way to bring an audience to an advertiser. Geez, we were watching the Giants vs. the 49ers a couple of weeks ago and I felt like I was watching three hours of commercials with a bit of football thrown in.
As far as the money the players make, well, why shouldn't they? Basically, their real role in the overall scheme of business is to pull people into the stadiums or to the TV set, where the advertisers will pay more money to be in front of an audience. It's a symbiotic relationship in which the players are doing the hard physical work so the others can make a bundle. So yeah, what the heck, if people are willing to spend all that money to watch a game, then certainly pay the players accordingly.

I've never been a team sports fan.
The only sport I watch on TV is boxing. On Superbowl Sunday I always watch the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet.

I like football at the end of the season. Because then I know it's only a short time away from baseball spring training

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Same here. I'm sitting here right now alone in my room drinking a cup of coffee and watching the game - just like I do every Sunday during football season.

Actually, I do like baseball a lot. Baseball is unique. It is the only ball game in which the defense has possession of the ball and a "perfect game" is one in which (offensively) nothing happens at all.

My favorite team sports (my favorite sport is boxing) are baseball and football. Then there's a big drop-off to third place. Hate the gap between the Super Bowl and the start of the baseball season.
