Al,
I'm using the most current Firefox and do not get spell check alerts in the Magic Café. I get them on other pages like Facebook but don't here. Maybe I have something set wrong? |

Gerry,
A few posts back you indicated that you had 4 holiday shows cancelled with some being clients that had been with you for years, I do have to ask the question did any of these clients offer to pay you your fee when the event was cancelled??? Not that you would necessarily have accepted it but it would be nice to get the offer! If there is any liklihood I cannot make an event I regret on the booking. As another above indicated, when bad weather is forecast I advise my client by what time I need a call, and my feeling is if I can show up on time and be ready for a show, there is no need for a cancellation. As an aside, I did a party a couple of winters ago, I left early for the show as it was on the other side of town, I took a shovel so I could shovel out a parking spot (and steel treads to get out of the spot), I was ready to go at the requested showtime . When it came time for the show I was asked to wait a little as most guests had not arrived "because of the weather". LOL I had a good chuckle as most guests lived closer than me, so we started an hour late! Blair

Hey Blair,
As for my situation, no one ever mentioned payment. I have to admit, we had a ton of snow that weekend. It must have been about two feet of snow, and there was no way I could have even made it to these shows. Two of the clients are like family to me, so I just let the payment bit ride - by choice. One client had a January/February make up day show since their group cancelled their holiday party. The other person was a new client. This lady actually hired me months later and I booked about 3 shows just off that one show. Again, that clause in my contract is meant to protect me so folks don't cancel JUST BECAUSE THERE IS THE THREAT OF SNOW. Once a new client cancelled just because we had two inches of snow (it had stopped snowing the night before), and she didn't think anyone would show up for their event. I actually made this client pay me in full, however, I did perform another show months later at no cost. Hope that helps. Gerry |

I get my spelling checked at every key stroke. I'm no techie, so I can't tell you what is wrong with yours. Firefox prints too small for an old man to see however.

This is all good.
I too have only had to evoke the contract once and I opted for less then 50% as they said they were willing to try to reschedule in just a few months. so I said that if indeed they do I would consider what they paid me now as part of the payment for the future show. meaning they never had to pay more then what the original show fee was. I would much rather go that extra mile and keep the client verses getting that one payment and never see them again plus putting a bad taste in their mouth. who knows who they will talk too. as 95% of my biz is from word of mouth I want people only saying good things about me. fortunately there has not been a lot of snow this winter so it has not been an issue. oh and on the issue of spell check I used to write my replies in word and then copy and paste. this way WORD does the spell check as I write. but now that I have google chrome it spell checks for me everywhere including when I write my reply on the Café. love it! sam

As some here seem to realize, I think that in this business a contract isn't necessarily something you follow blindly each and every time. A friend of mine rents out a vacation home and each occupant signs a contract agreeing to certain things, one of which is that the place must be cleaned before they leave. If it isn't, a $75 fee will be subtracted from their deposit. In three years of renting it out, she has charged maybe four people. While 99% of the time the place isn't cleaned to her specifications, it is obvious that the renters made their best effort, because of the contract. If she charged everyone who didn't clean it the way it needed to be done she would never have any repeat business.
It's always good to treat each situation individually. The contract is more of a statement of general terms and conditions, but I agree that in most instances, it's best to find a happy middle ground where both sides are happy and you don't end up losing a client over it.

It is snowing now, and I have a full weekend of shows. I will do them all unless someone cancels their party. I will only charge for the shows I do.

Tell Ken Scott for me that I'm sorry, but I had to go for the money.

I seldom take a deposit but did earlier this month now the entertainment is canceled. I had to find out through another form of venue entertainment. I never did state anything in the contract/invoice regarding the deposit though. Its not a big deal but still a bit peeved over the entire mess. The event is still going on it appears its just some of the entertainment (me) has been excluded for this event. Now I am in a quandry.

If it is a bad snow storm who is going to bring their kids out in it for free cake? Also why would I want to travel in it and endanger myself ?
Just reschedule the date that is what happens 90% of the time and hold the deposit or give them their money back. The whole bull crap thing about I could of resold my time to an other paying customer just a reminder it is still snowing no matter who bought your services. If some one told me I still got to pay for the show because of a contract even is it is a snow storm. I would make them show up in the crappy weather bring their equipment threw the snow Try and find parking since everyone is home Walk up the snow covered stairs. Then complain if they were late and ask for a refund. If they were on time say I am glad you made it I am still not paying you. |

One time there was a block club scheduled in the summer time. They paid me the deposit. It rained heavy that day. They had to cancel the block club party. I told my client I will keep the deposit for another event you will have with me in the future.
