Wow, I knew her as a child. Very sad but not unexpected.

Her cousin sang in a band I was in. I made a trip to N.J. for spring break to meet up with them.
I remember her mom was the choir director at the church and everyone was getting ready for Easter.
Except for Whitney who was slapping 45's on a portable record player and singing her heart out.
She couldn't have been more than 5 at the time. Every once in a while, someone would yell "Whitney, Shut Up!" but that didn't stop her. She just got very indignant and shouted back; "You just watch, someday I'm gonna be a great singer."
And so she was.

Wasn't a fan, but 48 is definitely way too young to go. RIP.

Seemed like she had a hard and tragic life. Hope she's got some peace now. Condolences to her family.

Her life was her own private rodeo, splayed across the pages. I keep wondering how much else she could have done and been if not crippled by drugs. I can't imagine the pressures involved in being that good, and being that famous. Relentless. Early top success has it's burdens, with you never being as good as you once were. Kind of like Judy Garland. Drugs helping you ricochet towards wreckage.

I think it is sad that her story is now weitten. No chance for rehab, rebound, or being, again, the Whitney we always wanted.

It's over. Rest in peace, Whitney. You done good with your angels and your devils. Kept them both on their toes. It was a good ride.

That National Anthem performance is probably the best example of her technical ability.
She was in total control. I think she studied for a time with Dionne's vocal coach, Helen Hubbard.
For some reason there were a lot of gifted kids in East Orange in those days.

Laurie, this photo is dated 1965. It's just as I remembered (Easter week of '67}.
She had her first solo with the choir that evening. Looking back on it now, she was deciding her destiny at that moment.

She inspired many, that's for sure.

So sad that she ended up with drug abuse... Smile

Very sad to hear.

Not sure if I find this worse to hear or not:

It's amazing, people will criticize you for "biting the hand that feeds you," while they're busy praising the hand that beats them.

I won't forget you Robert.
