She was one of best I ever heard and I just don't understand why so many of these great talented people seem to throw their lives away.

While every case is different, my vote is, for the most part, the cause & effect are switched. It's disproportionately those with the most personal demons who throw theirselves into the arts, particularly, with that singleminded drive that is usually required to be larger than life.
