It's not a routine per se, but the serpent silk is a pretty amazing silk trick for kids. I think I first saw it as a kid myself when a magician performed it on "Captain Kangaroo," and I was totally mystified. Also, for very young kids 3-4 years old, just tying a vanishing knot and having _them_ make it vanish by blowing softly on the knot brings smiles of wonder and delight.
Sometimes in a casual, impromptu one-on-one situation with a child, I'll vanish a silk a la Slydini's Paper Balls over the Head. On one occasion, the child's father caught the "vanished" silk and put it in his pocket. After the vanish, when the child asked "Where is it?" I first looked up my sleeves--and then made a magical gesture towards his Dad, whereupon Dad acted surprised and removed the silk from the pocket. In a more formal situation, I sometimes do the silk in light bulb. In the old days I used to use a whistle switch to make the light go out at the magic moment, but those were recalled as a hazard because the device would overheat. So I bought a remote control switch from Radio Shack that uses a wireless clicker that turns a lamp on and off. I just call the device a magic clicker. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Both Barry Mitchell and Tim Sonefelt (Wonder Imagery) have quite a few great silk routines for kids.

This routine is from my kid show and is included in my lecture. it is basically a vanish of a silk that reappears in a can. But there are lots of laughs along the way.
I vanish a 12-inch silk via YFM (your favorite method) and say, "Do you know where it went? Into that can on my table." There's a peanut brittle can on the table loaded with two spring snakes along with a duplicate silk. Now, some (if not most) of the kids will know there are spring snakes inside the can. But that's okay. I pick up the can and try to unscrew the lid. I can't unscrew it because "the lid is too tight." So I bang the lid against my table to try to loosen it. It still won't open. The kids who know about the can are getting anxious because they know what's going to happen--but the suspense is nearly too much to bear. Bang the lid again. Finally it opens and the snakes jump out along with the silk, scaring me so that in the confusion and excitement, I drop the lid on the floor. I pick up the silk and say, "Here it is!" Then I notice the snakes on the floor. I pick one up and stuff it in the can, holding it in of course with the thumb of the hand holding the can. As I bend over to pick up the second snake, the one already in the can jumps out! I act frustrated. This is repeated once more. Then I figure out a way to get both snakes safely into the can. But I pretend I can't find the lid. Then I see it on the floor. As I bend over to pick up the lid, the two snakes in the can jump out again. I think you get the idea. Eventually with feigned great difficulty, I get both snakes into the can. Often the kids will applaud just because they're happy I succeeded. If your peanut brittle can only comes with one spring snake (as I think most do), just buy a second can and add the snake from the second to the first can. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Duke's Dye Version (kids and adults - 2 different versions) - explanation Silk to Egg - 20th Century Silks (turning a young lady into a magician routine) - Half Dyed - I use them all the time and get great reactions.
But for an amazing silk production try a "Temple Screen" with as many silks as you can fit in. For one of my openings (set to music) I do vanishing cane in newspaper (which was sitting folded on top or the screen), then from the screen I produce 12 36" silks (pausing twice during their removal as if it were the end and then continue producing more) followed by a chain of 20 12" silks (which I reveal by throwing high in the air) followed by a red silk that transforms back into the cane (that was vanished in the beginning) in a mid air toss - at the end the screen is folded flat and put away (showing it unprepared?) - it always goes over with tons of ohhs and ahhs and lots of applause during and at the end (for adults and kids).
