Lately noticed that upon the request of George Kimery smoky mountain magic has moved the doves to rabbit trick from his has so it's no longer available, and I think this is sad because, the version is superior to George's. On the other hand, everybody knows how slow he is in building, and there are many that build the same illusion I hope that they will reach some kind of agreement like they did with the mini zag.

Ask Joe Fairchild, he has the rights for quite a few items George has built.

I apologize for my lack of history but isn't the basic principle of Doves to rabbit Public Domain?!
I mean this concept/method is used for MANY tricks out there. Are they all considered rip offs? It just seems to be such an old method that it would be hard to protect at this point. I could think of hundreds of effects that have design mods that are accepted as improvements etc. Enlighten me here. Thanks Chance

The original blammo box was invented by Billy McComb. U F Grant made the the Indian Dove chest before George even started his business.
I really think this falls into the common domain area. I think the only reason that Dan Woolfe stopped making them was out of respect to George. Richard

You could be right, hugmagic, but he deprived the magicians from a deceptive improved version and I realy hope they will make somekind of agreement. It seems that Dan is over ethical. For the record. I admire his work.

Richard,
I could be wrong on this, but didn't Milbourne Christopher invent the Doves to Rabbit effect? If so, is it possible Christopher's concept predated the work of of McComb and UF Grant? I honestly don't have the answer to this one. Thanks, Gerry |

I think you are right on the Dove to Rabbit but I am sure on Billy on the Blamo (which is kind of larger version but he did come up with it prior to Christopher and independently).

First Dahih, thank you! I just build stuff the way I'd do it for my own show.
As George related the story to me, he saw the U.F.Grant Indian Dove Chest performed at a convention in the 70's. (MagiFest? I don't recall.) Anyway, he didn't like it. Not visual enough. During the drive home, he dreamed up the method for the version he manufactured and sold. It was his creation...and like anything good in Magic, it was soon ripped off. I thought the same thing as you guys. I'd seen everyone manufacturing them. Osborne even published plans for one in Genii. So, I developed my own version with my own enhancements. Again, I built it how I'd want it for my own show. George saw the prop listed on my website one day, explained that it was his creation and asked if I'd remove it. It's one of the few things that George still builds himself. To my knowledge, no one (not even Fairchild, according to George) has been granted the rights. However, George doesn't like confrontation, so has not brought this up to other builders. Richard is correct. Out of respect for George and his friendship, I stopped producing the Doves to Rabbit at his request. Yes, Dahih. I have also sometimes thought that I may be "over ethical." But I sleep better at night because of it. Dan |

On a historical note, The Blammo (an enlarged doves to rabbit to produce a person) was a Kalin Idea and named by Joseph Gabriel because of the sound the doors made when they fell.
