In case this tend to happenfrequently then I would stop worrying about technique and just take a good long look into mirror... Cos there is something in performers style and attitude that makes people do this and feel that it is challenge situation.

The sequence of, 1) spectator takes card, 2) puts card back, 3) magician finds card, is common to the point of cliché. This means that as soon the spectator is asked to pick a card they are way ahead of you. Before they take the card they are expecting to put the card back and have you find it. Having the spectators out in front is an awkward spot for magicians.
The pick a card situation is one of the only situations that, some spectators, look for ways to trip up the magician because, it is one of the only situations where they know what is coming. One way to avoid the situation is to never get into it to begin with. Many people above gave suggestions in that vain. For instance, when I do a C2W effect I have the card selected from a face up fan. This is not exactly a genius level change, but it is enough to break out of the well worn sequence above and I avoid the challenges. |

To avoid this situation I always try to classic force a card on my spectators, and If I can't, glimpse it.
But there are still situations where neither of this possibilities can be used, so if I can't control the card, I can at least estimate its location, and therefore bring it near the top or the bottom of the deck, which will make my life easier tf I want to palm it off the deck and put it in my wallet. If you bring the card to the top by estimation, you can begin an ACR, and you can do nothing but sell it well, as it is magic even for you when it happens |
