I thought it was clever and well produced, but it's not something I'll use. But that's okay, I didn't sign up for this thinking I was going to get 12 effects that would immediately slip into my repertoire. If after a year has passed I don't get a handful of effects that are usable for me, then I'll cancel my subscription. GaryLee, the reason people make fun of you on this thread is because you say idiotic stuff. You were talking about how RS was a scam at first. And then how they certainly had a lot of "hackers" breaking into the website. For some reason you're desperate for this to be anything other than what it is. We get it, Gary, your self-esteem is in the gutter. So you look at everything through that prism. And so you can only fathom people joining a trick-of-the-month club because they want to "feel like they are a part of something special." But for most people -- or for me at least -- this is just a matter of being interested in magic, and liking tricks and the thought behind them, and that there is no other deal in magic where you can get a NEW, unreleased trick, with props, from some of the great minds in magic today, for $12 a month. That's all it is, Gary. |

In fact, I see more variance of opinion in those who have joined Real Secrets than the other way around. Some liked the first effect, others not so much. I'll say that it was essentially what I expected. Not the 'effect' itself, but how I thought I might feel about it. I never expected anything that would change the world but I thought it would be fun to get a new 'secret' on a monthly basis. I'm not sure I'll use the effect at this point but it's interesting. Better than a lot of stuff I've bought after reading the reviews and less so than many others. If that sounds a bit 'bleh', than RealSecrets is probably not for you. I find it fun, nothing more. I don't think it's the 'greatest thing to happen to magic in a decade!' and I never expected it to be. Now some here have said they don't like the way it's marketed, some have said they want to wait and see, and some have said it's just not for them, they'd rather buy something that they know what it will be. I respect those opinions. But others, a few here and a few over at the Magic Bunny, have stated loudly, over and over and over and over again, that it's a scam, it's dishonest, that people buying into it are dupes or worse. They've created all kinds of conspiracies about it in their minds and shared them with us ad nauseam. They’ve said that no one is saying the first trick is the greatest thing they’ve ever seen so that proves everything they’ve said. They’ve claimed that people can’t give an honest opinion about it so that proves everything they’ve said. They’ve said that people won’t say anything bad about it because they want to justify their purchase, they’ll get kicked out, etc. etc. In other words, they spend more time justifying their own opinion than anyone else. And as far as people over their not being bullied out of their opinion, be careful. If you disagree with them, they may just invent a conspiracy about you and use that as justification to kick you out. Now if you see that as balanced views, more power to you. I see it as childish one-upmanship. with us ad nauseum. |

I just read through the magic bunny thread. Yes there is lots of speculation but isn't that what this thread is all about. I don't care if some of them are against RS or not. Each will have their opinion, and they are entitled to it.

Being able to do an effect only a limited number of times, after which refills cannot be made but can only be purchased from Real Secrets, is disappointing.
I vastly prefer props which are durable or replaceable. |

Duane,
Ever used a mouth coil, flash paper, slush powder, an elastic loop? Many great magic props and effects require you to use up materials during performance. My experience has been that spectators really respond to seeing something being used up for their entertainment, even if it is something as simple as cutting a piece of rope or asking them to sign a playing card. They feel like an investment was made on their behalf and for their benefit. Not hard to understand the psychology. I have no problem with this being a consumable, and I only hope that I can get plenty more. |

Not to worry. I expect to be disappointed somewhen, too, this year. How can they possibly they know what we specifically like? Luckily there's only 3 more weeks till the next shipment. Can't wait...so far so good!

Jeepers - a lot of negative karma on this thread! Yikes!
Thought I would visit and see if anything interesting or constructive was being discussed. Never mind.

When buying those props, we know up front that they are consumable, and we can make informed choices on whether to become dependent on them.
Informed choice is impossible with Real Secrets. This is probably the crux of my reaction: Since I've blindly given them a considerable amount of money up front, I don't like feeling as if they're already seeking to tap me for further streams of revenue. |

By definition the gimmicks we'll be provided with each month can't possibly cost more than a few dollars to produce. So it's likely that future gimmicks will be things that will get used up or worn out eventually. Even a gimmicked card has to be replaced after a few dozen performances. So if you were expecting a life-time supply of gimmicks or something the quality of a Todd Lassen flipper coin each month for your $12, you'll probably be similarly disappointed in future months. |

Duane,
Can you imagine if they tried to make that particular, incredibly accurate and realistic item reusable? Do you think their design was intended to take a favorite of Tamariz, Ricky Jay and Dai Vernon to a new place or was it to gouge you on refills for a trick that could have been manufactured otherwise? Is it worth $12 in fun, cleverness, novelty, value? If no, fine. Different strokes. If yes, is your complaint that the item, which is by its very nature used up, something that gets used up? Magicians can be a confusing bunch. *squeek* |

Well...that is if this thread isn't either locked or deleted.

Actually I thought it seemed substantially more contrived, suspicious and fake than the standard approach to the effect, which is one that I like very much. So I don't agree that making it into a consumable effect is any sort of improvement.
If the next few installments similarly appear to be a Sample-Consumable-of-the-Month, I will very likely withdraw from Real Secrets. (Well, unless one of them turns out to be as cool as flash paper.) |

Many props can have home-replaceable elements which can be readily found at a hardware, craft or office supply store. Threads break; rubber bands snap; carbon paper gets used up. These would be home-replaceable.
"Real Secrets" suggests information and principles. I'm less interested in a Toy-of-the-Month club. |

HOLY GRAIL! I am not currently a member, but one of the best things I see about joining is, you are essentially talking about giving up a pack of cigs a week, or a dozen beers a month. This has to be one of the best bargains ever for those who want someone else to select their magic. I think we should support RS and give them a chance to establish a new marketing idea, rather than try to kill them as sprouts. Good for those who took the plunge, good for RS!

(as they wrote: "You'll get magic with receipts, gum, photographs, jelly beans, Rock Paper Scissors, Scratch Cards, diets, coins, brain power, drawings, ads, ropes, and so much more.") And that's what I ended up getting so I was pretty satisfied. I guess I wasn't expecting too much in regards to "information and principles" for 12 bucks. So it's all about expectations. I don't think you're going to find a lot of stuff with gimmicks you can make at home because those effects could all be put in a book or magazine and then you'd have people here complaining how they thought they were going to be getting custom gimmicks that they couldn't make at home. But I don't really know. Maybe we will see stuff like that. I would agree with others who say that this project might not be right for you. I just don't like seeing people disappointed. You strike me as someone who gets disappointed easily. Your complaint, which boiled down to, "I didn't like the effect, and you can only doing it a certain number of times." Is almost a magic version of the old joke, "The food is terrible... and such small portions!" |
